1. Sonia Gandhi to meet Congress CM Today
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi has convened a meeting of chief ministers of those states where the party is in power today to chalk out a political strategy to counter the Narendra Modi-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre. According to reports, this is the first meeting of Congress chief ministers after the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) lost power in 2014.
2. Censor Board Chief Pahlaj Nihalani Will Face a Trust Motion Today
A meeting of the Central Board of Film Certification (often referred to as the Censor Board) to be convened today and presided over by the Minister of State for Information & Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore, can pass a no-confidence motion against the board’s controversial chief Pahlaj Nihalani, and even decide on his eventual exit.
3. PM Narendra Modi Likely to Flag off Gatimaan Express
Gatimaan Express, the first semi high-speed train service between Delhi and Agra which would touch speeds of up to 160kmph, is likely to be launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi today. The trials of the semi-high speed train have already been conducted twice on the 200-km-long tracks between the two destinations and awaits the mandatory clearance from the Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS).
4. NCP National Executive to be Held in Patna From Today
The two-day national executive and convention of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) will be held in Patna from today. The meeting coincides with the party’s 16th foundation day. The meeting will be followed by the election of the national president and convention on June 10, party spokesman Nawab Malik said.
5. Andhra Pradesh Governor to Visit Delhi Today
Amid rising tensions between Andhra Pradesh and Telangana governments following the cash-for-vote scandal involving TDP MLA A Revanth Reddy, Governor ESL Narasimhan is expected to visit Delhi today. Narasimhan might call on President Pranab Mukherjee, Prime Minister Narenda Modi and Home Minister Rajnath Singh. Meanwhile, ministers of the two Telugu states continued to lock horns with each other over Revanth’s issue for the sixth consecutive day on Saturday.
6. Shafqat Hussain to be Hanged
An anti-terrorism court in Karachi on Monday issued a death warrant for condemned prisoner Shafqat Hussain, and ordered his execution to be conducted today. Superintendent Central Jail Karachi wrote a letter to the judge of ATC III, saying that the stay period of Shafqat’s execution is over, and therefore a black warrant be issued for the hanging of the death row prisoner.
7. CITU Calls for Protests to Condemn the Centre’s Proposed Labour Law Amendments
The Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) Aresident A K Padmanabhan on Sunday urged the Karnataka Government to appeal in the Supreme Court against the High Court’s verdict which had acquitted AIADMK leader Jayalalithaa of charges of acquiring assets disproportionate to her known sources of income. Addressing a press meet, he said that CITU would stage road blockades across Tamil Nadu today to condemn the Modi government’s proposed amendments to labour laws.
8. Odisha Truckers Will go on Strike From Today
Transportation of goods by road is likely to be hit hard as truckers across Odisha have decided to launch an indefinite strike. Speaking to the press on Wednesday, the Odisha Truck Owners’ Federation said they were forced to take the unpleasant step when the State government did not pay heed to their pleas for over a year.
