Pregnant Woman Dies in Faridabad Hospital, Kins Demand Probe
The family members alleged that doctors said the operation could only be done once the fees was submitted.
A pregnant woman, suffering from fever, died at Faridabad's Asian Hospital on 11 January, ANI reported. The hospital administration handed over a bill of Rs 18 lakhs to her family for a 22-day treatment.
However, the exorbitant free charged by Asian Hospital is being questioned by the family of the deceased woman. The victim’s kins have demanded an investigation against hospital administration, according to ANI.
The victim’s uncle told ANI that initially she had fever but was shifted to the ICU. The hospital staff said that she had typhoid and later said she has a perforated intestine, her uncle added.
“They asked us to submit Rs 3 lakh for operation and said it’ll be done once the entire amount is submitted. We have submitted Rs 10-12 lakh so far. They then asked for Rs 18 lakh,” her uncle remarked.
However, the hospital authorities said that a surgery was done on the woman who was 32-weeks pregnant after discovering she had perforated intestines, but she couldn’t be saved.
She was 32-weeks pregnant & had fever since 8-10 days. We suspected typhoid & began treatment in ICU. Her child couldn’t survive. We found she had a perforated intestine. A surgery was done but we couldn’t save her.Dr Ramesh Chandna, Chairman Quality & Safety, Asian Hospital
This incident comes at a time when hospitals are being scrutinized for charging inflated fees as alleged by patients’ families in the recent past. Earlier, Fortis Hospital in Gurugram came under the scanner for charging 15 lakhs for the treatment of a 7-year-old girl suffering from dengue, who later died.
