A petition seeking action against BJP chief Amit Shah for his remarks on Assam’s National Register of Citizens (NRC) and the Citizenship Act (Amendment) Bill, 2016, has been filed in the Supreme Court, Hindustan Times reported on Saturday, 11 May.

The petitioner, the Assam Andolan Sangrami Manch, reportedly said that Shah's assertion that the NRC would come after the citizenship bill, had left the people in Assam "shocked and scared".

Claiming that the amendment to the 1955 Act allows legally migrated Hindus, Sikh, Christians and Jains from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh to be citizens of Assam, the NGO said the move would impact the interests of the natives, the Hindustan Times reported.

The Assam Andolan Sangrami Manch, which opposes the citizenship amendment bill, has sought the court’s intervention in the matter.

Shah’s statement gave “a colour of religion” to the process of updating the citizen register, the petition said, adding that such remarks have given a wrong message to the people of Assam.
