After a few weeks of pause, Ola and Uber drivers resumed their strike in Mumbai on Sunday, 18 November, with nearly 70 percent or more cabs being kept off the road. Meanwhile, the ones that were available came with surge prices more than double the standard amount.

Number of cabs available are expected to be less on Monday as driver partners are set to carry out a morcha on the first day of the state legislative session, The Times of India reported.

Speaking to the newspaper, Union leader Govind Mohite said, “Majority of driver partners have gone offline voluntarily... The driver partners, along with family members, will march from Bharat Mata to Vidhan Bhavan on Monday morning and will submit their memorandum to the state government.”

In October, Ola and Uber drivers had gone on a 12-day strike that was finally called off on 2 November, right before Diwali, after state Transport Minister Diwakar Raote had intervened in the matter, the report added. The drivers had been demanding a hike in fare prices to match the rising prices of fuel in the country.

The protesting groups had warned that the strike would resume if the state government did not figure out a solution by 15 November.

With no assurance received from the state transport ministry, Rajya Rashtriya Kamgar Sangh leader Sachin Ahir said the protesters would now not rest until Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis himself intervened in the matter and listened to the drivers grievances, The Times of India reported.

“Thousands of families have been badly hit as most drivers are leading a hand-to-mouth existence and many are unable repay the loan EMIs,” he told the newspaper.

Twitter Irritated With Resumed Strike

Irritated Mumbaikars took to Twitter to speak about how the resumed strikes are affecting their daily lives, with some demanding that the state government figure out a solution that will lead the protesters to call off the strike and make their lives easier.
