The incident was also condemned by Congress President Rahul Gandhi, where he described it as “a despicable act of terrorism”.

"The New Zealand shooting is a despicable act of terrorism, that must be condemned unequivocally. The world stands in need of compassion and understanding. Not bigotry & hate filled extremism. My condolences to the families of the victims. My prayers go out to those who were injured," Gandhi said.

MEA Takes Congnisance of the 9 Missing Indian

Earlier in the day, it was also reported that nine Indians were missing after the terror attack. The Indian High Commissioner to New Zealand Sanjiv Kohl in a tweet about the incident wrote that "there are nine missing persons of Indian nationality/origin."

“Official confirmation still awaited," Kohli added. Similar claims were reiterated by the Ministry of External Affairs who in a notification statied:

"Our Mission is in touch with local authorities to ascertain more details. It is a sensitive matter and therefore we can't give confirmed numbers/names till we are absolutely certain."
