Modi Offers Credit, Partnership and Praise to Africa

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the India-Africa Summit in the national capital on Thursday. Speaking in the presence of 54 heads of state, Modi spoke about several issues and the bond that both parties share.

Modi also emphasised the need for Africa and India to work together in common areas of interest. He said that the Summit was a way great opportunity to bring many dreams under one-roof. He also said that India and Africa are two bright spots of hope and opportunity in global economy.

The fabric of this world is richer because of the 54 sovereign flags of Africa. We are deeply, deeply honoured by your presence. Today, the dreams of one-thirds of humanity have come together under one roof.

The Prime Minister praised Africa’s efforts to move towards mainstream innovation and cited areas where the continent was showing the world a way forward. Modi said,

  • Africa’s struggle and sacrifices (over the years) have helped in upholding democracy, combating extremism and empowering women.
  • Strong measures have been taken that helped radically improve healthcare, education and agriculture.
  • Africa is setting standards in wildlife conservation and eco tourism.
  • African energy helps run the engine of the Indian economy.

  • India has provided $7.4 bn in concessional credit and $1.2 bn in grants since the first Summit in 2008.
  • We have stood together under blue helmets to keep peace, and together we fought hunger and disease.
  • The population of two-thirds of India and two-thirds of Africa is under the age of 35 years. And if future belongs to the youth, this century is ours to build.
  • India will deepen partnership with Africa on clean energy, sustainable habitats, public transport and climate resilient agriculture.
  • India will work towards reducing digital divide within Africa and also the divide between Africa and rest of the world.
