1. Poonam Mahajan Romps to Victory Against Priya Dutt in Mumbai North Central

Poonam Mahajan, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) sitting MP for Mumbai’s North Central constituency, defeated Congress candidate Priya Dutt by a margin of 1,30,005 votes.

The contest between the two was expected to be tough but it turned out to be an easy win for Mahajan though her winning margin was lower compared to the 1.86 lakh votes she won in 2014.

Mahajan secured 4,86,672 votes (53.97%) against Dutt’s 3,56,667 (39.55%).

2. Gajanan Kirtikar Wins Big; Seat-Change Plan Fails for Sanjay Nirupam in Mumbai North West

Shifting to the Mumbai North West constituency did not yield the desired results for Congress candidate Sanjay Nirupam.

Shiv Sena sitting MP Gajanan Kirtikar won by 2,60,328 votes. Kirtikar had secured 5,70,063 (60.55%) votes against Nirupam’s 3,09,735 (32.9%) votes.

Former Congress city unit chief Nirupam had been lobbying hard to shift from the Mumbai North seat, which he had lost by more than 4.40 lakh votes to Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Gopal Shetty in 2014.

3. Highest NOTA Votes in Maharashtra Registered in Palghar

The Palghar constituency registered what is being touted as the highest number of None Of The Above (NOTA) votes in the state, with 29,479 voters choosing the option.

Out of the total 12,01,941 votes, the 29,479 under NOTA accounted for 2.45% of the total votes. The NOTA option is exercised by voters if they don’t want to vote for any of the candidates contesting from the particular constituency.

4. 3-Time Corporator Manoj Kotak Steps up in Place of Kirit Somaiya

A three-time corporator from Mulund, the BJP’s Manoj Kotak, defeated NCP’s Sanjay Dina Patil by 2.26 lakh votes. Of the 9.08 lakh votes polled in the constituency, Kotak got 5.14 lakh votes (56.61%). NCP’s Patil, who had represented the constituency from 2009-2014, got 2.88 lakh votes (31.7%). In 2014 too, he had got just 2.08 lakh votes.

At the counting centre in Vikhroli on Thursday, Kotak said, “It is a collective effort of all Shiv Sena, BJP and RPI workers that ensured our victory.”

5. Fire Breaks out in Bohri Mohalla, 2 Dead

A fire that broke out in the electrical supply unit of a third floor house in Bohri mohalla claimed at least two lives in South Mumbai. While the fire was controlled in an hour, a 72-year-old man was rushed to the JJ hospital along with three others. Two dead bodies were found in a room in the building where the fire was reported.

The fire broke out at around 11.30 pm on the third floor of a building next to Punjab Mahal in Bhendi bazaar. “We were preparing for namaz when the entire floor was filled with smoke. We had to rush out while some senior citizens were helped out by the fire brigade personnel,” said Mustafa Kothari (42), a fourth floor resident.
