5. Rly Minister’s Letterhead Faked to Get Passenger Tickets Confirmed

The Railway Protection Force (RPF) has arrested a ticketing agent from Surat for sending a request for ticket confirmation on a fake letterhead of Railway Minister Piyush Goyal.

The request for confirming four sleeper class tickets of Kota-Patna Express from Kota to Faizabad was sent to the Divisional Railway Manger (DRM) on his official fax and via WhatsApp on his official mobile number. Soon after the request was received on Saturday, it aroused suspicion and the DRM checked with the Railway Minister’s office about the request, and found the letter to be fake.

A senior official from RPF said, “The minister’s office denied sending any such request, and the matter was immediately handed over to RPF for investigation.” A special team was formed and the IP address of the computer used to book the tickets was traced. It was found that the tickets had been booked from Surat. Based on this information, the inspectors in charge of Surat and Udna were alerted. After finding out that a BSNL connection used to send the fax, the accused was traced and identified as Rashmikant Prahlad Patel.

6. TISS Urged to Resolve Deadlock Over Student Fee

The National Commission for Scheduled Tribes has urged the administration of the Tata Institute of Social Sciences to resolve the deadlock with students who are protesting against the institute’s decision to withdraw financial aid to students belonging to Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The instruction was passed on to the institute after a hearing held in Delhi on Thursday.

“At the meeting, we made our case for continuing fee concession and received a positive response from the members, including the chairperson and vice-chairperson,” said Fahad Ahmad, general secretary of the students’ union. “However, the HRD minister has already stated that the ministry is not responsible for the TISS scholarship crisis,” he added.

The students, who have been camping at the entry gate for the past 55 days, are protesting against a circular withdrawing financial aid to students from marginalised sections. The institute had in March agreed to waive off hostel and dining hall charges for students from 2016-18 and 2017-19 batches, which resulted in five out of seven union members calling off the protest. The proposal did not include any relief for OBC students nor did it extend the waiver to students in MPhil and PhD programmes.
