In what will be seen as symbolic as the end of an era, the famous RK Studio built from scratch by the legendary Raj Kapoor is now being sold. The decision to place the 2 acre studio located in Mumbai’s Chembur suburb was taken by the Kapoor family which includes Raj Kapoor’s wife Krishna Raj Kapoor, his sons Randhir, Rishi and Rajiv Kapoor and his daughters Ritu Nanda and Rima Jain. Various builders and developers have been now approached with a proposal to sell the iconic studio.

A report in Mumbai Mirror quotes Rishi Kapoor talking about the decision to sell RK Studio and the actor says that though the family did think about renovating the studio, but eventually the decision was taken to put it up for sale. The decision though an emotional one was done due to purely economical reasons.

2. Five-year Jail, Fine of Rs 1 Lakh for Flouting Silent Zones

THE MAHARASHTRA government on Sunday announced that anyone flouting noise pollution norms in Mumbai’s silent zones would invite imprisonment up to five years and a fine of Rs 1 lakh.

It also appealed to the residents to come forward and register complaints in various police stations across the city if they come across instances of violation of noise pollution norms in silent zones during the upcoming festival season.

In Mumbai, 110 areas have been shortlisted as silent zones. These essentially cover all government and private hospitals, nursing homes, schools and colleges as well as courts. For example, Mumbai University, Bombay High Court, educational institutes like the Government Law College and SNDT Women College as well as JJ Hospital and Jaslok Hospital are in the list of these 110 silent zones across Mumbai and its suburbs.

3. 22-year-old Convicted of Sexual Harassment Gets One Day Punishment

A METROPOLITAN magistrate’s court has convicted a man for sexual harassment and sentenced him to simple imprisonment “till the rising of the court”.

The day-long punishment was given by the court on April 20 after it found a 22-year-old man guilty under Section 354 (sexual harassment) of the IPC. Under the section, the maximum punishment for an accused can extend up to two years with a fine.

Further, the court directed the accused, Santosh Rupwate, to pay a fine of Rs 1,000, failing which he would have to spend seven days in simple imprisonment.

4. Action Panel Formed to Push for Muslim Quota

Even as the state government walks the Maratha quota tightrope, an action committee was formed on Sunday to push for reservations for the Muslim community in government jobs and education.

The decision was taken at a meeting held in the city in which over 6 0 organisations participated.

The erstwhile Congress-NCP government had issued an ordinance in October 2014 announcing a 5 per cent quota in jobs and education for Muslims, and 16 per cent for Marathas.

5. Navi Mumbai: Work on Airport Likely to Begin in October

CONSTRUCTION WORK on the terminal building and the southern runway of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) is expected to start from October.

Officials of the Navi Mumbai International Airport Private Limited (NMIAL), which will execute the work, said they plan to award the first tender for the airport’s construction in the middle of October.

On August 24, the GVK-led NMIAL had sought expressions of interest for construction and engineering work at the airport. The last date for responses is September 10. After the two-stage tender process, applicants whose bids are selected, would participate in the financial bids.

6. Residents Lock Horns With Developer Over Maintenance Deposit

The residents of a newly-formed co-operative housing society in Vasant Oasis Complex in Marol, Andheri East have demanded that the developer return the money collected as deposit from them to run the new society.

The occupants of flats in Veronica, Rosabel and Ebony - the three 22-storey buildings in Vasant Oasis complex - have been staging silent protests for the past three weeks at the office of the developer situated in the complex. They are demanding that the developer return the maintenance for 18 months paid by them in advance and deposits for other amenities parked with the developer now that the new co-operative society had been formed.

7. MMRDA Assesses How Much Salt Pan Land Can Be Used for Housing

The MMRDA will carry out the exercise of superimposing the new Coastal Regulatory Zone Maps (CZMP) on the maps of salt pan lands. The objective is to find out how much land from salt pans can be used for affordable housing projects of the state government.

The environmentalists are opposing the exercise on the grounds that it will cause environmental disasters. Ironically, the MMRDA in its draft development plan of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, published in 2016, had observed, "Salt pans are not only important from a livelihood, economy and salt production perspective, but are critically important from the point of view of flood protection as they are shallow, depressed areas holding sea water."

8. Landslides Delay Long-distance Trains

Several long-distance trains headed towards the city were delayed by over two hours after landslides blocked tracks in the Lonavala-Kalyan section. Officials said boulders fell on the tracks between Monkey Hill and Khandalatwice – around 9 pm on Saturday and later, around noon on Sunday – and were removed by railway personnel in these stretches.

Officials said the Chennai-CSMT Express (train no 11042) was delayed by over two-and-ahalf hours after it was stopped at Khandala. Further, Pune-Bhusaval Express (train no 11026) was held Lonavala, Hubballi-LTT Exp (train no 17321) at Kamshet and Pune-Karjat passenger (train no 51318 ) at Malavli station.
