1. Kamala Mills Fire: Bombay High Court Rejects Bail Plea of Mojo’s Bistro Co-Owner Yug Tuli
The Bombay High Court on Friday rejected the bail application of Mojo’s Bistro co-owner Yug Tuli, in connection with the Kamala Mills fire that had claimed 14 lives in December last year. Justice A S Gadkari, in his order, said, “For reasons recorded separately, the bail application is rejected.”
On December 29 last year, a fire broke out at restro-bar Mojo’s Bristo and spread to the adjoining 1 Above. The inquiry concluded that flying embers from a coal stove used to illegally serve hookahs at Mojo’s Bistro led to the blaze.

2. Seasoned Academic Pednekar to Head MU
Ending the protracted suspense, Governor CH Vidyasagar Rao on Friday appointed principal of Ramnarain Ruia College Dr Suhas Raghunath Pednekar, known as a seasoned academic with a “balanced” approach towards administrative issues, as the new vice chancellor (VC) of the University of Mumbai (MU).
Governor Rao, who is also the Chancellor of Universities in the state, handed over the appointment letter to Pednekar, 60, at Raj Bhavan.

3. Flatowners With Illegal Extensions to Shell out Steep Penalty
Despite a state government circular on relaxing penalties levied on property tax payable by homeowners with unauthorised constructions or extensions, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has decided to continue charging twice the property tax levied on the illegal area. The proposal to continue levying a steep penalty was approved by the civic body’s Standing Committee on Wednesday.
The provision for the penalty (twice the assessed property tax) was made under Section 152 (a) of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, 1888, as amended in April 2010. The amendment allowed property tax to be calculated on the basis of a property’s capital value instead of on its notional rent-earning capacity or rateable value.

4. Residents Get Notice to Vacate Flats Hours After Building Collapse
Hours after the third floor of a three-storey building collapsed at Dhobi Talao in Mumbai last Saturday, the residents were served with a notice by the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), asking them to vacate their houses as it was a safety concern. Power supply to the building was also disconnected.
While several residents of the annexe building to the Jer Mahal shifted to hotels or to their relatives’ homes, many continue to live in the building. Peter Pinto (63) is one of them.

5. Doc Seeking Job for Nephew in BMC Duped of Rs 25 Lakh
The Shivaji Park police in Dadar arrested two men who duped a Jogeshwari resident of around Rs 25 lakh after promising to get her nephew a job in the BMC. Police said one of the accused, Suraj alias Latikesh Kalav, posed as the personal assistant (PA) of Shiv Sena leader Aaditya Thackeray while the other, Atul Vishwasrao, claimed to be a civic official when they scammed the victim.
Dr Manisha Nagavekar, a doctor from Jogeshwari, had lodged the complaint against the two after they failed to deliver on their promise of securing a job for her nephew, an engineering dropout, in the BMC.

6. RTO Inspector’s Wife Attempts Suicide Over ‘Domestic Violence’
An inspector at the Nashik Regional Transport Office (RTO) is in the dock after his wife tried to jump in front of a moving train at Andheri station as she was allegedly tired of being subjected to domestic violence. Jayshree, 30, later told RPF personnel that despite her many attempts to file a case against her husband Sujit Bhaviskar, cops never registered anything more than a Non-Cognisable (NC) complaint. “Today, we have laws which prohibit men from even looking at a woman in the wrong way, but women like me have nowhere to go,” Jayshree told Mirror.
Sujit, meanwhile, refuted Jayshree’s claims, telling Mirror, “She has pulled such stunts on several occasions. There are laws in the country which are very powerful for protection of women. So one tends to misuse them.”

7. Mumbai Plastic Surgeon Demands Rs 2 Crore From FB
A Mumbai-based plastic surgeon has served a legal notice to Facebook Incorporated and its founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Mark Zuckerberg for ‘wrongfully’ deactivating his Instagram account. In the notice, served on Apri 24, Dr Debraj Shome has demanded Rs 2 crore as damages for causing him mental trauma. According to his lawyer Ashish Mehta, “Dr Shome’s Instagram account was deactivated within minutes after he posted critical comments about Jet Airways on March 3.”
