1. Three Dead, Nine Injured As Fire Breaks Out at Technic Plus One Building in Goregaon

A major fire broke out at Techniplus one building in Goregaon (E) at around 4.45pm on Sunday killing three and leaving nine including eight firemen from the Mumbai Fire Brigade injured.

The three dead have been identified as -Naimuddin Shah, Ram Avatar and Ram Tirathpal. Bodies of Avatar and Tirathpal were recovered from the lift in the building that was stuck between the fourth and fifth floor, officials from the MumbaiFire Brigade said.

Eight fire engines and six jumbo water tankers were at spot.

2. Dadar Beach Warrior Gets a Pat From UN

After 40 weeks of clearing our mess, Chinu Kwatra is getting his due. The face of the Dadar beach cleanup was on Sunday felicitated at Versova beach by Erik Solheim, under-secretary and head of the United Nations Environment Programme, for spearheading the campaign.

Solheim is in the city to take part in celebrations centred on World Environment Day (WED), which falls on June 5. India is the global host of WED 2018.

The UN official said beating plastic pollution — the theme for WED this year — is one of the biggest environmental challenges of our time. Solheim also felicitated Malhar Kalambe, founder of Beach Please; Jay Shringarpur from Dadar; and Indraneil Sen gupta from Mahim — all of whom are involved with beach cleanliness campaigns.

3. 3 Youngsters From Navi Mumbai Go on a Picnic, Drown at Nagaon Beach Near Alibaug

Three youngsters drowned at Nagaon beach, near Alibaug, on Friday evening. While the bodies of two victims – Ashish Mishra, 20, and Fahad Siddiqui, 21 – were recovered, the body of the third victim, Chaitanya Sule, 20, is yet to be found.

According to police, the victims, along with 10 other friends, were visiting Alibaug and had booked two rooms in cottages. Around 7.30pm, when they were at Nagaon beach, six of them decided to take a swim in the sea.

“Of the six boys who went for a swim, four ventured into the deep sea. After a while, one of them noticed the other three drowning and raised an alarm,” said an official from the Alibaug police station. “After the friends’ attempts to rescue them proved unsuccessful, they informed the local boatmen,” he said.

4. Central Railway Plans to Add Glass-ceiling Coach to Neral-Matheran Toy Train

The Central Railway (CR) planned to add a coach with a glass ceiling in the Neral-Matheran toy train, senior railway officials said. Similar to Vistadome coach, commuters can enjoy the scenic beauty of the hills.

Officials said the coach would be modified in Mumbai. “The fare would be fixed in consultation with the Railway Board. The scheme will be finalised … so that the facility is available immediately after monsoon,” said V Malegaonkar, Additional Divisional Railway Manager, CR.

Officials also plan to introduce steam engines in its running, and develop some railway buildings at Matheran into guest houses.

5. Undertaker Booked for Botch-up While Embalming Body

Brijesh Shukla wanted to give his mother a dignifed farewell after she lost her battle with cancer in March. But he was in for a shock when the undertaker gave him his mother’s body — her face had swollen to twice its size and blood was oozing from her body. Shukla was left with no option but to cremate her in a hurry.

“Her head turned black and swelled to twice its normal size. I was worried it would burst,” said Shukla, who lives in Mumbai Central. Shukla’s mother, Kanti, had passed away at the age of 57 at Bombay Hospital on March 29, two days after being admitted there.

The family had planned to cremate her remains in their native Kanpur on March 31, and were referred to an undertaker to embalm her body for inter-state travel. An undertaker, also known as a funeral director, is a professional involved in the business of funeral rites.

6. CBSE XII Results: Mumbai Misses the National Mark but Talent Shines

The Class XII Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) results were announced on Saturday, but students from Mumbai failed to make it to the all-India toppers’ list. The city, which comes under the Chennai region, however, outmatched the national pass percentage of 83.01with its 93.87.

While the overall results, unlike ICSE last week, weren’t inspiring, some extraordinary talent shone through. DPS Nerul students Arpit Singh and Yashna Kumar bagged top spots in the city in science and humanities at 98.6 and 96.8 per cent. In the commerce stream, Harneet Singh of RN Podar School, Santacruz, scored 98 per cent.

“Among the 200 DPS schools in the country, our school has been topping for the past three years. We tell students to work in a way that they are not affected by changes in paper pattern and evaluation,” said DPS Nerul principal J Mohanty. “Students were initially disappointed because of the economics re-examination, but eventually were satisfied. The average class XII percentage in our school is almost 90 per cent,” he said.

7. Wet Glue Nails Duo Pasting ‘Godmen’ Posters in Trains

Pasting posters advertising the services of ‘godmen’ on local trains landed a pair of unemployed young conmen in a sticky situation recently.

The RPF arrested the two, Sahil Abbasi, 21, and Irshad Shaikh, 20, who are originally from Meerut last week, and recovered nearly 20,000 posters from the cons, one of whom had printed his own phone number on the posters.

Abbasi and Shaikh had already pasted 3,000 in 51 coaches in trains on the Harbour Line. The matter came to light when an RPF official posted in the car shed in Kurla realised that the trains pulling in for stabling for the night were covered in posters.
