Two years since a major fire at city’s Deonar dumping ground caught national attention, not much has changed. Two fires have broken out at the ground in the past 10 days which have raised questions over measures taken by BMC to avoid the occurrence. Experts tell us not much has changed.
A spate of fires broke out at the dumping ground in early 2016, leading to a crisis-like situation. After much uproar, the civic body declared a number of measures it would take to secure the dumping ground and prevent fires from breaking out. Besides, a Bombay High Court-appointed monitoring committee is supposed to monitor the BMC’s efforts.

2. Student Caught Copying Kills Self
A Class VIII student of Michael High School, Kurla, hanged herself in her home on Monday after she was pulled up for cheating in the final exam.
The police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) case. Statement of the school staff and principal have also been recorded.
On Monday, Riddhi Tripathi, a resident of Powai, was caught after she sneaked in chits for her Science exam. She was sent to the principal’s office, who tried to contact her parents. But neither her mother nor her father could be reached. After this, the school said, she left to go home in a ‘calm, composed’ state.

3. Mumbai Civic Body Seeks Legal Opinion on State’s Plastic Ban
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has sought legal opinion on how to implement the ban on use, storage, sale, distribution and transportation of plastic that has been imposed since Friday.
“Many questions on the implementation such as those pertaining to the fine or setting up of collection centres are unanswered. The BMC’s legal team is going through the notification. The course of action will be decided based on their remarks,” said a senior civic official, on condition of anonymity.
The state has declared that violators will be fined Rs5,000 and Rs10,000, for first and second offence. A third-time offender will be fined Rs25,000 and can also face three months imprisonment. Civic officials said the fine to be levied is not mentioned in the notification.

Three months after 14 people lost their lives in a fire on December 29 last year that began at Mojo’s Bistro and spread to adjacent restaurant-pub 1Above, it has now come to light that the FSI meant for setting up information technology (IT) infrastructure was used to create space for restaurants and other commercial establishments.

5. Cong-NCP Twisting Facts in Loya Death for Political Gains: CM Fadnavis
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis Tuesday said the Congress and NCP leaders were trying to politicise the B.H. Loya death by giving it a twist of foul play.
While arguing that the final matter rests with the Supreme Court, Fadnavis said, “There is no question of Maharashtra government’s cover up in the case as all facts are in the public domain. Soon things will get clear.”
Replying to a questions raised by Congress-NCP leaders in the state Legislature Assembly, Fadnavis said, “Justice Loya had come to Nagpur for the wedding of a fellow judge Swapna Joshi’s daughter, accompanied by judges Shridhar Kulkarni and Shriram Modak. They stayed at Ravi Bhawan, which was booked by a court assistant in his own name.”

6. Duo Enters Flat Seeking Water, Robs Woman
Two unknown people robbed a 27-year-old-woman on knife point in her house in Sewri on Monday. The duo entered the family’s flat on the 15th floor in a 24-storey building asking for water and then robbed her by holding the knife to her three-year-old daughter’s throat.
The police said Ajmera Bibi Khan, who lives on rent in the flat along with her husband Alamgir Khan and daughter, thought that the intruders were labourers working in the neighbouring flat where renovation work is underway, and readily agreed to offer water when they asked for it.

7. Car Financier Loses Arbitration Award
The Bombay High Court has set aside an arbitration award of over Rs 26 lakh granted in favour of Volkswagen Finance Private Limited and instead asked the company to pay Rs 50,000 to a politician and her builder husband within two weeks for “fraudulently” invoking the arbitration against them.
Earlier this month, Justice RD Dhanuka allowed the petition filed by Preeti Mahapatra, who contested the Rajya Sabha elections from Lucknow in 2016, and her husband Harihara Mahapatra, on a dispute that arose after they had taken loan from Volkswagen to purchase an Audi Q7. The couple said that despite repayment of the entire amount demanded by it, Volkswagen had approached an arbitrator who passed an order in the car financing company’s favour.

8. Teen Kills Cousin; Disposes Body With Mother's Help
When he forced himself on her, she cried for help, but her screams went unheard, and when she threatened to complain to her father, he strangulated her — this was the anguishing incident that rocked a small Satara village last week, when a 14-year-old raped and murdered his own cousin, and then, with the help of his mother, disposed of her body.
The incident happened on March 21 in Ner village, Pusegaon. The Pusegaon police have arrested the mother-son duo and registered offences against them under various sections of the IPC and POCSO Act. The boy has been sent to the juvenile home in Satara, while his mother, a widow, is in police custody.
