As per the BMC records, Mumbai has witnessed four deaths due to tree collapses this year. The civic body identified three victims: Rajaram Yadav from Borivali, Kanchan Nath from Chembur, and Sharda Ghodeshwar, also from Chembur. The fourth victim was an unidentified 16-year-old boy who lost his life after a tree fell on him in Colaba’s Navy Nagar.

The BMC, however, is not willing to reveal that five people, and not four, have died of tree collapses in 2017. Following a week-long investigation, Mumbai Mirror can reveal that on July 15 – exactly a week before former Doordarshan anchor Kanchan Nath’s demise – a 65-year-old retired banker, Ashok Kunder, died on the spot when a chunk of a Jambul tree collapsed on him near Sarvodaya Vastra Bhandar in Chembur (E). July 15 was Kunder’s birthday.

While the Chembur police took down a case of accidental death, sent the body for post-mortem at Rajawadi Hospital, and mentioned in their report that Kunder died after a tree branch collapsed on him, the BMC officials claim they have absolutely no knowledge of this incident.

CCTV footage showed that the man, who was wearing a red shirt and khaki pants, also tried to abduct a minor girl in Maharshtra Nagar.

“But she found something suspicious and started to cry. The man left the girl as not to attract people’s attention,” said an officer from Kherwadi police station.

To arrest the man, the Kherwadi police have shared CCTV footage of the incident in the neighbouring areas and all police stations.

3. BMC To Probe Why Chembur School Has No Class VIII

BB Chavan, deputy director of education, Mumbai division, has asked the BMC to probe the absence of class VIII at Ayodhya Nagar municipal school in Chembur due to which 71 class VII students had to take admission in private schools.

Chavan’s letter dated December 5 said by not providing class VIII at the school, the civic body had violated provisions of the Right to Education Act 2009. Section 6 of the Act stipulates the government or local authority to establish schools within a period of three years of the commencement of the Act. RTE, which provides for free elementary education to children from six to 14 years, came into force on April 1, 2010.

The order for an inquiry by the BMC came following a complaint by education activist Shyam Sonar.
