The Shiv Sena is all geared up to perform the bhoomipujan of the Bal Thackeray memorial at the mayor’s bungalow in Shivaji Park, Dadar, on the Sena founder’s birth anniversary on 23 January. The Balasaheb Thackeray Memorial Public Trust headed by Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray will take possession of the 11,551-sqm plot at Shivaji Park in Dadar this week.

2. Humpback Dolphins Spotted Near Bandra-Worli Sea Link

A pod of Humpback Dolphins, usually spotted along the coast of Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts of Maharashtra, was spotted between near the Bandra-Worli sea link on Sunday, 20 January.

The spotting of dolphins near the Mumbai coast has recently increased. Last year, a Humpback dolphin was spotted between the Versova and Madh Jetty on Mumbai’s west coast. Earlier this month, a pod of Indian Ocean Humpback Dolphins was spotted by fishermen near Sassoon Docks.

The Dhangar (shepherd) community in Maharashtra has served an ultimatum to the state government to consider its long-pending demand for reservation under Scheduled Tribe (ST) category.

4. Minor Girl Kills Toddler to Settle Scores

In a shocking case, a 15-year-old girl killed a two-year-old to settle scores with the toddler’s mother. The incident took place at Tulai village in Murbad taluka of Thane district on Saturday, 19 January, when the victim, Anushka Jadhav, was at home with her two older sisters while their parents were out for work.

5. In a First, Family Agrees to Donate Man’s Bone

In a rare case, a family of a 44-year-old man agreed to donate his bones apart from several other organs following his death at Apollo Hospital in Navi Mumbai on Saturday, 19 January.

The bone was donated to Tata Memorial Hospital where it would be used for bone cancer patients, an official from the hospital said.

6. Piyush Goyal Flags off New Rajdhani Train at CST

Railway Minister Piyush Goyal flagged off the bi-weekly Rajdhani Express train between Mumbai and Delhi from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (CST) railway station on Saturday, 19 January.

The train is equipped with LED backlit snap frame showcasing major attraction of the cities falling en route, provided for a better aesthetic look, bio-vacuum toilets in two coaches and an onboard wi-fi hot spot based entertainment system in each coach with over 500 hours of free infotainment content.

7. Two Upcoming Mumbai Metro Lines to Tap into Solar Energy

The two Metro lines in the western suburbs that are likely to be operational from next year may meet 35 percent of their total power requirement through solar energy.

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), the nodal authority for Metro, plans to install solar panels on the roof of the stations for the upcoming Metro-2A (Dahisar to DN Nagar) and Metro-7 (Dahisar East to Andheri East) lines. Currently under-construction, Metro-2A will have 17 stations and Metro-7 will have 13 stations.
