1. Gokhale Bridge Collapse: Probe Report Blames Rail Staff, BMC
A railway probe report has pinned the blame for the partial collapse of a Road Over Bridge in Andheri earlier this month on both railway and civic officials. Heavy corrosion and the piling of additional load of cables, paver blocks etc by the BMC have been blamed for the weakening of the Gokhale bridge. The preliminary inquiry report by Sushil Chandra, Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS), Western Circle attributed the mishap to “failure of Railway staff and others”.
“The accident occurred due to heavy corrosion and pitting of cantilever steel brackets supporting the pathway, resulting in thinning down of section,” stated the report.

2. Teacher Arrested in Navi Mumbai for Stripping 5-year-old Who Whistled in Class
A teacher from a private English-medium school in Kalamboli, Navi Mumbai, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly stripping a five-year-old student in class as punishment for whistling.
The incident occurred on July 14, but the Class 1 student’s parents are said to have learnt about it only on Tuesday.
The complaint registered by the child’s father at Kalamboli police station stated that the class teacher humiliated his son by removing his trousers and making him stand in his underpants in front of students in the class.

3. Shiv Sena Bats For Law Against Lynching
Criticising the recent incidents of lynching by mobs across the country, the Shiv Sena on Wednesday said there should be a law against such killings. Innocent people are being killed by violent mobs in the name of suspicion, the Sena said.
In an editorial in party mouthpiece Saamana, the party said lynching incidents by mobs continue across the country including in Tripura, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and Karnataka. “People do not get violent because of suspicions of child lifting or cow slaughter alone but there are other reasons as well,” said the editorial.

4. Scooter Hits Pothole, Woman in ICU With Head Injury
The police said the victim had been identified as Aditi Kadge, who worked as an assistant in the administration department of Nanavati Hospital in Santacruz.
A 35-year-old woman from south Mumbai landed in hospital after she had fallen off her bike, after allegedly hitting a pothole outside Tardeo police station. The incident took place in the wee hours on Wednesday, when the woman was heading to the police station allegedly after a fight with her husband. She was admitted to Bhadia hospital near Grant Road.

5. Sudan Student Who Underwent Amputation After Train Mishap Dies
A 24-year-old student from Sudan died in Sion hospital on Wednesday, a week after falling off a train at an allegedly crowded Dadar station. The student, a native of South Sudan in Africa, was forced to undergo amputation of both legs last week after the accident.
Jowahir Abdullah was slated to catch a flight back home from Mumbai when she reached Dadar station on July 12 from Sangli by the Koyna Express.
According to Dr Jayshree Mondkar, dean in-charge at Sion hospital, Abdullah suffered multiple organ failure and succumbed to poly-trauma injury at 1.10 am on Wednesday.

6. 16 Men Under Lens for Sexual Abuse of Teen
At least 16 men are on the police radar for allegedly sending lewd messages to a 16-year-old boy from Khar between May and June after making his acquaintance through a dating app.
Two businessmen have been arrested — one last month and another on Monday — for raping the minor at his residence after befriending him through the app. While scouring the boy’s social media chats to ascertain if he had been sexually assaulted by anyone else, the police found that 16 other men sent him lewd messages.

7. No Night-time Metro Construction in Sobo: Court Refuses Go-ahead Till Noise Pollution Report Is Out
The Bombay High Court said on Wednesday that it was not inclined to allow the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRCL) to carry out construction for the Metro-III line in Cuffe Parade at night, until the Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) submits a report on noise pollution.
The HC had directed the MPCB to record ambient noise levels in the area day and night, and submit a report on August 2. “Till the report is submitted, we propose to continue the previous order prohibiting MMRCL from carrying out work at night,” a division bench of Justices AS Oka and Riyaz Chagla said.

8. 200-bed Booster for Bhabha
KB Bhabha Hospital in Bandra West, which treats nearly five lakh patients in its OPD and admits around 40,000 every year, is set to get bigger and better.
The civic-run healthcare facility — it was the first hospital in Bandra to start a labour ward and post-natal care unit in 1957 — has charted a mega expansion plan to introduce super-speciality departments like nephrology and cardiac thoracic surgery (CVTS), add another 200 beds, trauma ICU and improve existing medical services.
