1. MHADA to File 456 Cheating Cases Against Developers

State housing body MHADA will soon file cheating against those builders who have not shared apartments with it despite having availed incentives from the government for the redevelopment of dilapidated buildings from Colaba to Sion and Mahim.

Ravindra Waikar, minister of state for housing, has directed the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) to get FIRs registered against developers in 456 cases, a move that is likely to turn up the heat on unscrupulous builders in the city.

The irregularities pertain to the redevelopment of cessed buildings in the island city. Cessed structures are mostly those buildings that had been built in the first half of the last century and whose rents have been frozen under Rent Control Act.

4. Eman Ahmed's Remarkable Turnaround

How are you” asked an Egyptian journalist to Eman Ahmed at Abu Dhabi’s Burjeel Hospital yesterday.

“Ana bekheir, shukran (I’m fine, thank you),” said Eman. Dressed in a red top and sporting a red scarf, and with subtle make-up, Eman did look as fine as she has ever done since she left Mumbai for Abu Dhabi in early May. Once considered to be the world’s heaviest woman – she weighed over 500 kg when she was admitted into Mumbai’s Saifee Hospital to February this year – Eman now reportedly weighs around 150 kg, and is all set to be the UAE’s brand ambassador in its fight against obesity.

At the press conference at the hospital yesterday – her first ever such event -- she smiled a lot and thanked her doctors for setting her on the path to recovery. Apart from speaking comfortably and coherently, the 36-year-old, who was paralysed after she suffered a stroke three years ago, can now also move her upper and lower limbs.

The United Way, Mumbai, and the Mangrove Cell (Govt. of Maharashtra), have produced a first-of-its-kind field guide to the mangrove ecosystems that exist in Greater Mumbai. The field guide includes a map that displays the locations of all the mangroves swathes, but the major part of the guide is devoted to a handy list of 40 species of birds, reptiles, animals and trees that are typically found in these clusters, such as the dogfaced water snake and the black-winged stilt.

In addition, the guide contains a brief overview of the risks the mangroves face, ranging from the clearing of mangrove forests for infrastructure projects to pollution. There is also ashort list of what an individual can do to help e.g. report mangrove cutting to the proper authorities and taking part in mangrove plantation drives, plus a helpline. “The challenge was very few people relate to mangroves and therefore the material had to be attractive and difficult to discard,” Jayanti Shukla, the chief executive, of United Way, Mumbai, said. “It also had to be relevant and easy to understand for the typical Mumbaikar of any age group and any educational qualification.”
