Sabita Nath, a 96-year-old resident of Kolkata’s Anandapur area, woke up on Saturday morning to find herself locked inside her eldest son’s house. Sabita has been living with her son, Bikas Nath, for five years now. He went off to the Andamans for a vacation with his wife and son, without informing his mother or asking any of his other six siblings to look after her.

On Sunday, when two of her daughters came to visit their mother, they found the door locked, and jumped the wall of the house to see their mother lying in a pool of her own vomit.

She was too weak to cook and had asked her neighbours to throw some food across the wall shared by them. The food was too spicy for her and she could not digest it. Bikas’ siblings allege that he had taken their mother from their family house just a few feet away to his own house, in order to get her to write off all her property to him.

My husband died 40 years ago. We had worked very hard to raise our children. I never thought I’d have to see this day.

Nath also said that after she wrote off her property to Bikas, she was frequently ill-treated by him and his wife. In fact, about eight months ago, Bikas had called one of his sisters, and asked her to take his mother away for a few days as he could not look after her. It was only last Thursday that Sabita came back to stay with Bikas.

Sabita’s youngest daughter Nileema then filed a complaint at the Anandapur Police Station. Oddly enough, when asked by The Quint if all the siblings knew that their mother was being ill-treated, Nileema said, “We knew, but we do not talk to my brother so we did not interfere.” When asked if she felt neglected by all her kids, Sabita said. “I’m too old now. All I want to do is spend my remaining days in peace.”

Bikas Nath has been unreachable. “The keys of the house have been given to the elderly lady. No FIR has been filed”, said SHO Anandapur Police Station.
