1. Jharkhand Assault Case: Five Arrested, Two Cops Suspended

Four more persons were arrested and two police officers suspended on Monday in connection with the death of 22-year-old Tabrez Ansari, who was thrashed by a mob in Jharkhand for alleged theft and forced to chant “Jai Shri Ram”, police said. On Sunday, police had arrested one person in connection with the case.

Confirming the arrests, Saraikela-Kharsawa Superintendent of Police Karthik S said, “The officer-in-charge of Kharsawan Police Station and one assistant sub-inspector have been suspended for not understanding the gravity of the matter. We have also arrested five villagers in connection with the same.”

Ending her alliance with the Samajwadi Party (SP), Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) president Mayawati on Monday declared that her party would contest all future elections, “small and big”, on its own.

Earlier this month, while saying that the BSP would contest the Uttar Pradesh Assembly bypolls on its own, Mayawati had said that it was not a “permanent break” from the SP. She had said that she could work with SP leader Akhilesh Yadav again in the future if he “fulfills his political duties”.

3. S Jaishankar Is BJP Candidate for Rajya Sabha Seat From Gujarat

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar was named the BJP candidate from one of the two Gujarat seats on which bye-elections will be held on July 5, according to a statement issued by the ruling party.

The minister was formally named as the BJP candidate hours after he formally joined the BJP in the presence of party working president J P Nadda. The BJP statement also announced Jugalji Mathurji Thakor as the party candidate for the second seat from Gujarat.

4. Viral Acharya Quits as RBI Deputy Governor Six Months Before End of His Term

Reserve Bank of India Deputy Governor Viral Acharya has resigned from his position six months before the end of his term, according to sources in the central bank.

Mr. Acharya, who was in charge of the monetary policy department, reportedly resigned due to “personal reasons”.

5. If Talks Are Initiated, There Will Be Positive Response: Hurriyat Responds to J&K Guv

A day after Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik said that Hurriyat leaders were ready for talks with New Delhi, Hurriyat Conference chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said Sunday that if “meaningful” talks are initiated, “there will be a positive response”.

Speaking to The Indian Express, Mirwaiz said that they have always been ready for a meaningful dialogue to resolve the Kashmir issue. “We are convinced that a way out can only be achieved through talking,” he said.

6. No ‘Credible Estimate’ of Black Money Available: Parliamentary Panel

The parliamentary panel on finance of the 16th Lok Sabha, in its report submitted to the Lower House on Monday, has said it is difficult to provide a “credible estimate” of the black money stashed away overseas by Indians, and suggested that it could be anywhere between $3.6 billion to $490 billion between 1980 and 2010.

This massive range in the panel’s report is because three recent studies – by the National Institute of Public Finance and Policy (NIPFP), the National Council for Applied Economic Research (NCAER), and the National Institute of Financial Management (NIFM) – have provided widely varying results.

7. All Over in 90 Seconds, Families Didn’t Know, Say Balakot Pilots

The Indian air strike on a Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) terror camp in Pakistan’s Balakot was “over within 90 seconds” and the mission was carried out with such secrecy that not even close family members of the assault team knew about the developments, two pilots part of the predawn operation on February 26 said on Tuesday.

Indian Air Force (IAF) fighter planes destroyed the JeM camp in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s province after entering Pakistani airspace for the first time in 48 years following a suicide bombing claimed by the terror group that killed 40 troopers of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pulwama on February 14.

8. AugustaWestland Case: SC to Hear ED Plea Against Rajeev Saxena Today

The Supreme Court will on Tuesday hear the Enforcement Directorate’s petition against the permission granted to Rajeev Saxena, an approver in a money laundering case related to the AgustaWestland helicopter scam, to travel abroad on medical grounds.

The agency challenged the Delhi High Court’s June 10 order allowing Saxena to go abroad for treatment of blood cancer and other ailments from June 25 to July 24.
