1. Assembly Polls: Fewer Women Cast Votes in Thane District

The Thane district election claimed to have undertaken voters’ awareness drives among women groups, but it did not seemed to have worked. Merely 45.65% women from Thane district voted in the Assembly polls. Moreover, the number of women voters is much less than men voters.

A total of 30,62,544 people across Thane district cast their votes on Monday, out of which 17,32,912 voters were men and 13,29,487 were women.

2. Attack on Cops in Chembur: 17 More Protesters Identified, 33 Arrested

A day after police resorted to lathicharge after people taking part in a funeral procession attacked police personnel in Chembur, 17 more protesters allegedly involved in the attack were identified on Wednesday. So far, 33 people have been arrested on charges of attempt to murder.

The attack took place after the funeral procession of Pancharam Rithadiya (42), who had committed suicide after his daughter was allegedly kidnapped six months ago, turned violent. The protesters had blocked the Eastern Express Highway in Chembur, following which police had do to resort to a mild lathicharge.

Heavy rainfall is likely to dampen the festivities around Diwali in Mumbai, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said Wednesday. Rain is also expected to lash the city Thursday.

Two weather systems over the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal will bring thundershower to the city over the next three days, the IMD said. It is also likely to cause heavy rainfall on October 27.

4. MMRDA Plants 51,000 Saplings in Kalyan, Will Maintain It for Three Years

In an initiative to go green, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) Commissioner RA Rajeev launched the ‘MMRDA Green Initiative’ in which as many as 51,151 saplings were planted at Shilphata, Thane. This is the first time the authority planted saplings in large numbers.

“All saplings have been planted taking into consideration the ecological balance,” said Rajeev.

The saplings were planted in association with the Maharashtra Forest Department and Forest Development Corporation of Maharashtra. As per the MMRDA, it is state’s first such tripartite agreement for a green initiative.

5. Promised 2.5 Million Pounds, Powai Woman Pays Rs 45.69 Lakh to Online Fraudsters

A 31-year-old businesswoman from Powai gave away Rs 45.69 lakh to online fraudsters after she allegedly received an email from a UK resident, claiming that she wants to donate 2.5 million pounds to her so that she can undertake charity work in India.

In her complaint to the police, filed earlier this month, the woman has alleged that on August 21, she received an email from 67-year-old UK resident Bertha Mellon stating — “I want to donate 2.5 million pounds to you for charity work in your country India, contact me for more.” The email added that the money was with the Royal Bank of Scotland.
