1. Judge, TT and a Dozen Passengers Robbed at Gun Point in Garib Rath Train
Around a dozen passengers travelling in the Ajmer-Chandigarh Garib Rath Express were robbed of their valuables by masked robbers near Rohtak, police said on Wednesday, 23 January.
Among the robbed passengers are a travelling ticket examiner (TTE), a woman judge and four more women whose gold and diamond jewellery were snatched from them, the police said.
The government railway police (GRP) in Rohtak said the incident occurred around 2.30 am on Wednesday when the Chandigarh-bound train stopped at Rohtak junction and some robbers entered the G9 coach. When the train reached Makrauli village, the robbers inside the train pulled the chain, following which, their accomplices waiting at the spot entered the coach with guns and knives and robbed the passengers of around Rs 2 lakh cash and valuable jewellery.
The police have registered a case against unidentified persons and formed four teams to arrest them.

2. Teenager Among 9 Held in Maharashtra for ‘IS Links’
In a major crackdown, the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad on Wednesday, 23 January, said it has arrested nine people including a juvenile from Mumbra, Thane and Aurangabad for alleged links with the ISIS.
The arrests came during the course of an investigation into the presence of sleeper cells ahead of Republic Day.
The ATS claimed it had “very reliable input” about a group aligned with the ISIS and put the suspects under surveillance for several weeks.
The ATS seized chemicals, powder, mobile phones, hard drives, SIM cards, acid bottle, knives etc during the raids. A case under Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act has been registered and further investigation is in progress.

3. Appeals in Criminal Cases to Be Filed in 10 Days, Delhi HC Told
Filing of appeals against acquittal or discharge of accused in criminal cases, including of child sexual abuse, which used to take months and sometimes over a year, will now be done within 10 days from the date of judgment/order, the state government’s Director of Prosecution has told the Delhi High Court.
A bench of Chief Justice Rajendra Menon and Justice VK Rao was told by Additional Standing Counsel Gautam Narayan that “any default in this regard will be viewed very seriously, and appropriate action against the erring officer shall be taken/recommended as per relevant rules”.
“The endeavour of this Directorate is that every acquittal/discharge report should be filed… well within the stipulated time, that is 10 days from the date of receipt of judgment/order, under normal circumstances,” reads the Special Office Procedure (SOP) signed by Delhi government’s Director of Prosecution Pankaj Singh.

4. Mumbai: Man Kills Friend in Virar Flat, Flushes Body Parts Down Toilet
A 40-year-old man was arrested for allegedly murdering his friend and flushing parts of the body down a toilet. Police was informed when body parts and chunks of flesh were found in the septic tank of the society in Virar, Maharashtra.
The deceased, identified as 35-year-old Ganesh Kolatkar, was missing since 16 January. The accused has been identified as Pintu Sharma. “Sharma and Kolatkar were friends. Sharma had recently rented a flat at Bachraj Paradise Society in Virar. He brought Kolatkar to his house on January 16, following which the duo got into a spat,” said Jayant Bajbale, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Virar.
An officer who is closely related to the case, said “After the society residents found their bathrooms choked, they called the cleaners who alerted us when they found fingers and chunks of flesh in the septic tank. We started looking at all the locked houses in the society.”

5. Noida: Nigerian Arrested for Rs 22-Lakh Job Fraud
The centre for cyber crime investigation (CCCI), Noida has arrested a Nigerian for allegedly duping a Greater Noida resident of Rs 22 lakh on the pretext of offering a job in the United States.
Staying in Bengaluru, the accused had impersonated as an official of a US-based firm claiming to offer a job in the reputed company, trapping his target in a web of money trail that took officers of the CCCI to at least eight bank accounts opened in Bengaluru and Mizoram.
The accused – Aujo Olaniyi (35), a native of Nigeria - was arrested after the cyber cell took the help of Google to trace his mobile number which he had been using at the time of orchestrating the fraud.

6. Delhi: Party Drugs Worth Rs 90 Crore Seized; 5 Held
Delhi Police's special cell has arrested five members of an international drug syndicate, including an NRI, for allegedly smuggling "party drugs" and contraband worth more than Rs 90 crore has been seized, police said on Wednesday, 23 January.
Party drugs worth more than Rs 90 crore in the international market, including 13.5 lakh tablets of drugs, 10.2 kg of tramadol powder and 500 gm of ketamine, have been recovered, officials said.
According to police, the accused collected drug tablets and other contraband from Mumbai and Delhi and exported them to London in UK, Nepal and Malaysia.

7. J&K: Missing Person Case Takes Chilling Turn, Complainant Turns Out to Be Killer
A complainant who approached police in a Jammu and Kashmir village with a request to trace out his missing sister-in-law later turned out to be her killer.
The man, identified as Liyaqat Hussain, a resident of Poonch district’s Kunaiyan village, has been arrested, police sources said. Liyaqat confessed to the crime during the police interrogation, following which a case was registered against him.

8. Teenage Tutor Held for Rape, Murder of Six-year-old Student in Ghaziabad
An 18-year-old private tutor was arrested on Wednesday, 23 January, for allegedly raping and murdering his six-year-old student in Ghaziabad’s Loni, the police said.
The child’s body was found in a vacant plot near her home on Tuesday morning, a day after she went missing. The police said the accused lured the girl from her residence on the pretext of buying her an eraser on Monday night. They said he took her to his house, which is in the same locality, and raped her before strangulating her to death.
The police have added Sections 376 (rape) of IPC, and Sections 5 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act to the FIR, earlier registered for murder. The accused initially hid the girl’s body on the terrace of his maternal uncle’s house, where he lived, before dumping it on a vacant plot the next morning.

9. Odisha: Angry Villagers Ransack Police Station Demanding Arrest of BJD MLA
Hundreds of villagers stormed inside a police station in Odisha and ransacked it, demanding arrest of BJD MLA who had allegedly threatened a former sarpanch.
Khurda SP Dipti Ranjan Ray said hundreds of villagers barged into the Begunia police station in Khurda district on Wednesday afternoon, 23 January, and tossed around the furniture and files. They also attacked the policemen on duty.
The SP said the locals demanded arrest of BJD MLA Prasahant Jagdeb who had allegedly threatened former sarpanch Nabakishore Swain, a Congressman. Police said Jagdeb had reportedly asked Swain to get some papers signed by his wife, the current sarpanch to which the later did not agree, and the MLA then reportedly hurled abuses at Swain, the former sarpanch.
