1. NSA Invoked Against 7 Arrested for Cow Slaughter in Bulandshahr

The Uttar Pradesh Police have invoked the National Security Act (NSA) against seven accused arrested in connection with the alleged cow slaughter in Bulandshahr’s Siyana tehsil last month, officials said on Monday, 14 January.

The police authorities claimed that the alleged cow slaughter by the three accused - Nadeem, Mahbub Ali and Azhar was an ‘act of terror’ and was meant to “disturb peace” in the area.

2. Ten-Year Jail for Mumbai Man Who Impregnated 17-Year-Old Niece

A 44-year-old Bandra widower was found guilty of raping and impregnating his 17-year-old niece and sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment by a special Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act court on Monday, 14 January.

Special public prosecutor Iqbal Yunus Solkar said the survivor, who is from Telangana, delivered a boy whose DNA matched with that of the accused. The child is in a shelter home.

3.Man Poses as MHADA Official, Cheats Mumbai Businessman of Rs 15 Lakh

A 37-year-old man, who posed as a Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) official, and cheated a businessman of Rs 15 lakh on the pretext of giving him a flat at VB Nagar, in Kurla, was arrested by the Chunnabatti police recently. The police are on the lookout for two others who were part of the fraud.

The police found that the accused, Vijendra Yeshwant Phedkalkar, a Nalasopara resident, was earlier arrested in a similar case by the Bhoiwada police.

4. Blamed for Stealing Rs 150, 17-Year-Old Boy Kills Father in Delhi

A 17-year-old boy allegedly stabbed his father to death after the latter accused him of stealing Rs 150 from their house in the Eastern range, police said.

According to police, the boy and his mother took the victim to the hospital. “We detained him at the hospital and he has been charged with murder,” said a police officer, adding that the father’s body has been sent to a local mortuary for post-mortem.

The minor used to work at a private company and earned a small sum. However, he never shared it with his family members, and it became a bone of contention between them, police said.

5. Delhi: Driver ‘Beats up’ Cops for Levying Fine

The driver of a pick-up truck, who was fined for rash driving, allegedly assaulted three traffic policemen last week. Two persons, Babul and Sanjay Kumar, were arrested in connection with the incident which took place on 9 January and charged under IPC sections 186, 353, 332, and 34 at Rajouri Garden police station, police said.

“We were near ESI hospital when we saw a pick-up truck driving rashly. I asked the driver to stop and fined him. I also impounded his vehicle,” read the complaint filed by constable Pardeep. Three hours later, the constable and two colleagues were assaulted by the two accused near Rajdhani College, police said.

6. Kanhaiya, Umar Question Timing of ‘Politically Motivated’ Charge Sheet in Sedition Case

Hours after the Delhi Police filed a charge sheet against him in the 2016 sedition case, former JNU President Kanhaiya Kumar on Monday, 14 January, termed it “politically motivated” and questioned the timing of the police action.

“The charge sheet is politically motivated. However, we want the charges to be framed and a speedy trial in the case so that the truth comes out. We also want to see the videos that have been placed on record as evidence by the police,” Kumar said.

Taking to Twitter, Kanhaiya said, “We had asked from Modi ji Rs 15 lakh, employment and achhe din. It Does not matter if acche din came or not, chargesheet against us has definitely come. If this news is correct, I thank Modi Ji and his police.”

7. Over 100 Wanted Criminals Held Within 48 Hours in Gautam Buddh Nagar

The Gautam Buddh Nagar Police claimed to have arrested over 100 wanted criminals from across the district over the past two days.

A special drive named Vajra was launched at midnight on 11 January, the police said, adding that it continued till 13 January.

Gautam Buddha Nagar SSP Vaibhav Krishna had directed officers of all 22 police stations in the district to find persons accused of heinous crimes like murder, rape and illegal activities, including attempt to murder.

The arrested persons include five murder accused, 14 accused in robbery cases, 13 booked under the Gangsters Act, eight booked for attempt to murder and two rape accused.

8. Delhi: Woman Alleges Threat Calls from Husband

A woman who had accused her husband of disrobing her, has now claimed that she has been receiving threatening calls from him, the police said on Monday, 14 January.

The 24-year-old victim had filed an FIR against her husband for forcing her to change her religion, disrobing her in public and for absconding with her money. The police have launched a manhunt for the accused.

The 30-year-old accused from UP’s Jadonpur village was living with his wife and their daughter in Noida Extension, the police said, adding that he worked for a consultancy firm in Noida.

9. Man Jailed for Killing Indian-Origin Doctor in UK Road Accident

A man who killed Indian-origin doctor Jasjot Singhota in a road traffic collision in January 2017 after failing to clear frost from his car windscreen has been jailed after he pleaded guilty to careless driving and driving uninsured.

Scotland Yard said on Monday, 14 January, that Alexander Fitzgerald, 26, was sentenced at the Kingston Crown Court to 10 months imprisonment for causing death by careless driving, reduced from 16 months, and four and a half months for causing death by driving uninsured, to be served concurrently.

He was also disqualified from driving for 23 months.
