1. ‘Thak Thak’ Gang Robs, Assaults Bollywood Actor Farheen Prabhakar in Delhi

Actress Farheen Prabhakar became the latest victim of the notorious thak-thak gang on Saturday morning, 19 January. Four men in a car hit her SUV near Saket, got into an argument and allegedly punched her on the forehead, and then robbed her bag and mobile phone.

The incident happened on Press Enclave Road in full public view. However, police have denied that Farheen, the wife of former Indian cricketer Manoj Prabhakar, was punched. They have registered a case of theft and snatching at Saket police station.

2. Forged Papers Used to Procure Drug Worth Rs 1,000 Crore: Police

The anti-narcotic cell (ANC) of Mumbai Police, probing the smuggling of Rs 1,000 crore banned fentanyl, has invoked Indian Penal Code sections of cheating, forgery and breach of trust after learning that the accused had forged documents and procured the banned drug.

On a tip-off, ANC had laid a trap near Vakola, Santacruz, and arrested Salim Dola, Ghanshyam Saroj and brothers Chandramani and Sandeep Tiwari from Vile Parle on 27 December 2018. A search of their car resulted in the recovery of around 100 kg of fentanyl worth Rs 1,000 crore.

3. Jessica Lal Murder: Life Convict Manu Sharma Files Plea for Premature Release

Siddharth Vashisht, better known as Manu Sharma, who is serving a life term for the murder of model Jessica Lal in 1999, has moved the Delhi High Court seeking premature release from jail.

The plea sought setting aside of the 7 December 2018 order of the competent authority, which cited “interest of justice”, while accepting rejection of his premature release in the minutes of meetings of Sentence Review Board held on 4 October 2018.

The 43-year-old convict has contended that authorities — including the prison, police and social welfare department of the Delhi government — had recommended his premature release from prison.

4. In Dry State Bihar, Cop Comes Drunk for Wedding, Loses Bride, Lands in Jail

An inebriated Bihar policeman, who had arrived at his wedding venue at a village under Kahalgaon subdivision in Bihar’s Bhagalpur, was told off by his would-be bride on Thursday night, 17 January.

The constable, Uday Rajak, posted in Nalanda, was later arrested under the anti-liquor Act.

Eyewitnesses said the girl refused to marry Uday after she came to know that her fiance was drunk and the ‘barat party had indulged in brawl with some members in an inebriated condition.

A few relatives of the bride, including her maternal uncle, uncle and maternal grandfather, sustained injury in the quarrel.

5. ‘Beard Pulled, Kicked’: Sikh Shop Employee Assaulted in US

Police in the US state of Oregon have charged a white man with hate crimes for brutally assaulting a Sikh employee at a convenience store on Monday, 14 January, for refusing to sell him cigarette rolling papers without seeing his identity papers.

Andrew Ramsey, 24, had assaulted Harwinder Dodd, the store clerk, for his religion, according to court documents cited by local media outlets.

Ramsey had pulled on Dodd’s beard, punched him in the face, threw him to the ground and kicked him, before others in the store, including Justin Brecht, an Oregon state legislative aide and former Marine, intervened to pull aside the alleged assailant and held him till police officer arrived to take him into custody.

6. 33-Year-Old Man Who Trafficked Women to Delhi Arrested

Six months after 16 women from Nepal, allegedly trafficked to the capital and to be sold in the Middle East, were rescued from south Delhi, the Delhi Police Special Cell arrested the main accused near ISBT.

Police said the 33-year-old accused hails from Nepal and lives in Wazirabad.

The breakthrough came on Saturday, 19 January, after a Special Cell team received a tip-off that the accused would be meeting an associate near ISBT Kashmere Gate.

When the team tried to nab him, he spotted them and tried to flee, police said. “He jumped into the Yamuna. Two constables and an ASI-rank officer also jumped in and caught him,” said DCP (Special Cell) Sanjeev Kumar Yadav.

7. Sasikala Given Preferential Treatment in Prison: Inquiry Report

An inquiry committee headed by a retired IAS officer Vinay Kumar has found that AIADMK leader VK Sasikala serving a four-year sentence in a disproportionate assets case was accorded special treatment which included additional cells and a separate kitchen in Central Prison, Bengaluru.

The committee’s findings were revealed in reply to an Right to Information (RTI) query raised by IPS officer D Roopa.

The report says though Sasikala was entitled to just one room, four additional rooms were allotted to her. Sasikala and and her fellow convict, J llavarasi, were allotted a cell in the first floor, while the adjacent cells were not allotted to anybody and the entire wing was cordoned off citing security reasons.

8. Rajasthan: Molester Tries Again After Being Let off by Cops, Girl Kills Herself

A 16-year-old girl committed suicide allegedly after her neighbour molested her at Madarpur village in Bharatpur district of Rajasthan, police said on Saturday, 19 January.

The girl, a student of Class 12, was found dead in her house late on Friday, 18 January.

She left behind a suicide note, in which she wrote that her neighbour, Deepak Singh, had entered her house at night on two occasions and molested her. Her family members caught him and handed over to police. She wrote that she was a good girl and was committing suicide as her neighbour had tried to molest her, the police said, quoting the note.

9. Delhi HC Grants Police Protection to J&K Rape Victim, Her Husband

An alleged rape victim and her husband, who have temporarily shifted in New Delhi from Jammu and Kashmir apprehending threat to their lives, have been given protection by the Delhi High Court.

The high court was informed by the couple that personal circumstances forced them to leave their native place, and made serious allegations against some police officials and political workers.

The couple claimed that the woman was allegedly physically assaulted and raped and the man was kept in detention for several days by the J&K police and now he was out on bail.
