1. Fully Dependent on Private Water Tankers: 100 OMR Resident Associations Write to TN CM

Barely days after the private water tanker lorries announced a strike – and then temporarily withdrew the strike – in Chennai city, the residents of Old Mahabalipuram Road (OMR) have written to the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, seeking his intervention to address the water crisis situation in OMR area.

The letter, written on behalf of over 100 Resident Welfare Associations (RWAs) spread along the IT expressway in Chennai, lists the causes of worry for over 4,00,000 families residing in various apartment complexes and colonies on the OMR. Calling themselves ‘The Federation of OMR Residents Associations’ (FOMRRA), the group has listed the issues faced by them, especially during the summer, and has sought the chief minister’s intervention to address the issues.

2. 3 Die of Asphyxiation While Cleaning Well

Three persons died of asphyxiation in Perungudi on Monday afternoon while they were cleaning a well at a house. One of the men who died, was the son of the owner of the house, said police. Police said, owner Kanappan’s son Santhosh Kumar, 32, Kalidas, 35 and Anbualagan, 35, along with three other men, were cleaning the well which was not used for many months.

“At around 4.30 pm, they began cleaning the well. While Santhosh, Kalidas and Anbualagan had gone deeper inside the well, the other three were only a few feet from the opening of the well,” said a police officer. Kanappan, who was supervising the work, found the six of them unconscious inside the well and immediately alerted the fire and rescue personnel.

3. EVKS Elangovan Blames EVMs, Election Commission for His Theni Defeat

After his humiliating defeat in Theni, Tamil Nadu Congress candidate EVKS Elangovan has put the blame for his loss on electronic voting machines (EVMs), Election Commission of India (EC) and money power.

Elangovan said that he had proof of wrongdoings and will soon approach court with all the necessary evidence. The Congress veteran lost to Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister O Panneerselvam’s son P Raveendranath Kumar, a political newbie. Elangovan is the only Congress candidate in the state to lose the polls. While Raveendranath polled 5,04,813 votes, Elangovan could manage only 4,28,120 votes in Theni.

4. Depressed Man Cuts His Own Genitals

A 47-year-old man who was in an inebriated condition allegedly cut his own genitals in Madhavaram during the wee hours of Sunday. Aslam Basha, a resident of Kannagi Street, Thiruvalluvar Nagar in Kolathur, was found unconscious under the Rettei Eri flyover near Madhavaram on Sunday morning.

A passerby who found him bleeding and a blade in his hand and immediately alerted the Madhavaram police. A team rushed to the spot and rushed him to the government hospital. A police officer, quoting the victim, said he took the step as he was depressed and was under ‘tension’.

5. Bikers Drop Bag Containing over Rs 1.5 Crore in Chennai

Two men on a bike reportedly dropped off a bag containing a huge amount of currencies while they were crossing a road in Varadhapuram, in the early hours. Abiramapuram police seized the cash from the spot and have taken it to the police station. Further investigation is on.

While a patrol team of police personnel were on duty at around 1 am, two persons who were on a bike, crossed the area in Erikarai Street, Varadhapuram, and dropped the bag on the road. Even as the police personnel called out to the duo, they sped away without heeding the police men on duty.
