1. Engineering Students Protest Against Anna University’s Regulation

Here are the latest news updates from Chennai.

Students of engineering colleges affiliated to Anna University have launched a statewide protest against a regulation issued in 2017. The university implemented the choice-based credit system (CBCS), under which the students who fail in a paper in a semester can reappear only in the next year along with their juniors in that semester.

The students are protesting against this rule. Anna University Registrar J Kumar, who met the students and later the reporters, said the university had received the students' written demands. However, any changes in the regulations can be made only after a committee studies the demands.

2. AIADMK Will Not ‘Piggyback’ BJP to Gain Ground in TN: Thambidurai

Dismissing all rumours, AIADMK propaganda secretary and Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai on Thursday, 17 January, declared that the party would not allow the BJP to “piggyback” ride on its shoulders, in the former’s attempt to establish its presence in Tamil Nadu.

Thambidurai’s statement comes amid rumours of a possible AIADMK-BJP tie-up, after RSS idealogue and Tuglak Editor S Gurumurthy said that a AIADMK-BJP alliance would help the latter gain ground in the state, the report added.“What sin has the AIADMK committed to carry the BJP on its shoulders? There is no scope for the BJP to establish itself in the State,” he said.

3. IIT-Madras Launches Start-up to Train Students in Artificial Intelligence

The Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT-M) on Friday launched a start-up to prepare the workforce for the advent of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) age by training students at nominal costs. The start-up "PadhAI" offers an affordable hands-on course on 'Deep Learning' which is the most successful sub-field of AI.

It is open to all students, faculty and professionals with a basic background in mathematics and Python. The fee for students and faculty is Rs 1,000 and for working professionals Rs 5,000.

4. ISRO Announces Incubation Centre in Trichy, Research Facility in Kanyakumari

With an aim to provide thrust to space science across the country, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has announced a list of new projects including an incubation centre in Trichy, Tamil Nadu and a space research facility in Kanyakumari.

“Under this program ISRO is announcing that three students from each state and union territory… will be selected to ISRO for the Young Scientists program for one month. Under this program, the selected students, mostly 8th standard passout students, they will be taken to ISRO, they will be given lectures,” ISRO’s Chairman Dr K Sivan said.

5. DMK IT Wing Functionary Arrested for Facebook Post on TN CM, Party Lashes out

The Tamil Nadu police arrested a functionary of the DMK's IT Wing following which the party has hit back at the government. Loganathan, the DMK's IT Wing Assembly Coordinator for Aravakurichi was arrested for publishing on Facebook posts that were reportedly derogatory and aimed at Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi Palaniswami. The post was reportedly related to the sensational break-in at the Kodanadu estate of late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

Police sources said that the post contained morphed images of the Chief Minister as well as Transport Minister MR Vijayabaskar. In response to this, the DMK has lashed out at the Tamil Nadu government, alleging that 'different standards are applied to different people when it comes to Social Media Policing' by the state, especially with regard to no action being taken on complaints lodged by the party.
