1. Ukai Dam Water Level Crosses 338 Feet in Surat

The water level in Ukai dam reached 338.64 feet on Friday, 30 August with an inflow of 1,200 cusecs even as the same quantity of water is being discharged from the dam. According to the Ukai dam authorities, the maximum water level in the dam during the same time in 2018 was 319 feet. The rule level in the dam has been fixed at 340 feet from 1 September. The inflow has reduced as the upper catchment areas of the dam in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra has been receiving moderate rainfall, they said.

The live storage of water in the dam is 5617.92 million cubic metre (MCM), while on August 30, 2018, it was 2732.58 MCM with an outflow and inflow of 600 cusecs. The dam authorities had fixed the rule level in the dam at 335 feet for August and it has been revised to 30 feet from 1 September.

2. 2017 Assembly Election Case: Gujarat HC Allows Chudasama to Depose

The Gujarat High Court (HC) on Friday, 30 August, allowed state education and law minister Bhupendrasinh Chudasama’s application seeking permission to depose before the court in connection with the election petition filed against his assembly poll victory from Dholka constituency in 2017.

The petition against the senior BJP minister was filed by Congress leader Ashwin Rathod, who alleged that the then Returning Officer (RO) Dhaval Jani had invalidated 429 postal ballots, which led to his loss to Chudasama by just 327 votes.

While Chudasama at the time of submitting his list of witnesses on January 16 to the HC had not added his own name as a witness, he expressed his desire to do the same on the last date of hearing.

The BJP leader is expected to remain physically present for his deposition on 9 September.

3. Ishrat Jahan Case: Four Cops Seek Discharge

After a special CBI court hearing the Ishrat Jahan fake encounter case discharged former police officer DG Vanzara and NK Amin, four more cops accused in the case, including IPS officer Girish Singhal, moved court on Friday seeking discharge from the case.

Apart from Singhal, the other three who have moved the discharge application includes Tarun Barot, Anaju Chaudhary, and JG Parmar. All of them have contended that the state government did not provide the sanction to prosecute them in the case.

While Singhal is deployed as inspector general of the Commando Training Centre at Gandhinagar; Barot and Parmar have already retired from service. Chaudhary is working as a commando with the state reserve police.

4. Gujarat: Residential Society in Vadia Village Asks Members Not to Sell Property to Dalits, Muslims

A residential colony in Vadia village of Nandod taluka in Narmada district has “suggested” its members to refrain from selling properties to members of the Muslim and Dalit communities. The “suggestion”, which attracted the ire of the Dalit community, was part of a multiple-point pamphlet that the society later claimed was just part of a “list of agendas to be discussed at their society meeting”.

The pamphlet, which went viral on social media Thursday, 29 August, mentioned several points about the society’s cultural events in view of the upcoming festivals as well as the charge to be levied on sale of properties. Among them, the society also mentioned that the members must “refrain from selling properties to the Muslim and Vankar (Dalit) communities”.

5. Congo Fever: 30 Samples Sent for Testing; Vector-Borne Diseases in Control, Says Gujarat Govt

After the recent spate of the Crimean Congo Haemmorhagic Fever (CCHF) which claimed three lives, 30 samples of those suspected to have come in contact with CCHF-positive patients, were sent for testing at the National Institute of Virology on Thursday. The results are expected to arrive by Saturday, 31 August or Sunday 1 September.

Meanwhile, apart from the 30 samples sent on Thursday, 29 August 19 samples have been tested, of which six samples tested positive for CCHF and 13 others tested negative. Of the 13 negative samples, four were doctors, four were nurses, one was a lab technician and four others were relatives of those who had tested positive, or had come in contact with the infected patients.

According to state Health Department officials, three patients of the six positive samples succumbed to the fever, while three others are undergoing treatment and are clinically stable.
