1. 20,000 Volunteers to Clean up Sabarmati Today

Nearly 20,000 Amdavadis have vowed to join the Sabarmati river clean-up drive, that begins on Wednesday, led by Chief Minister Vijay Rupani. The project is one of the measures to be undertaken by the administration to mark World Environment Day.

The volunteers – comprising social organisations, civic workers, corporates and NGOs – will pick up plastic and other waste from the polluted river.

The city's mayor Bijal Patel and municipal commissioner Vijay Nehra said the drive will continue till 9 June. "After the river has been cleared of all the waste, only treated sewage water will be discharged into it," said Patel on Tuesday. A total of 18 crore litres of treated sewage water is expected to be let into the river every day.

2. Train Hawker, Whose Parody Video Had Gone Viral, Released

Avdhesh Dubey, who was arrested for unauthorised hawking on train, was released on bail late Monday evening (4 June) after intervention from Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma.

On Friday, 31 May, 30-year-old Dubey was convicted by a mobile railway court and sentenced to 10-day simple imprisonment for selling articles on trains without licence, committing nuisance or using abusive or obscene language, unlawful entry among others.

Notably, his arrest had come after a six-minute-long video showing Dubey doing a parody of a host of politicians like Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, while selling toys to the passengers on a train had gone viral on several social media platforms. His arrest had also created a huge uproar with support pouring for him from different quarters of the society.

3. Unable to Bear Child, Woman ‘Hangs Self’; Husband, In-Laws Held

A day after a woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself at her residence in Fatehpura area of the city on Monday, (3 June) Warasiya police on Tuesday (4 June) arrested her husband Sanjay Shinde, mother-in-law Sushila and sister-in-law Mangla Parmar for abetment of suicide.

Initially, the Warasiya police had registered a case of accidental death on the basis of Sanjay’s statement that Tejal took the extreme step as she was depressed over the death of their pet dog.

However, on Tuesday, Tejal’s mother Vandana approached the police and alleged that she committed suicide because she was being harassed by her husband and his family as she was not being able to bear a child even after six years of marriage.

In her complaint, she alleged that Sanjay used to abuse Tejal and kept on threatening her that he would marry another woman. Sushila and Mangla also abused Tejal and blamed her for not being able to bear a child, the complaint stated.

4. Drop Criminal Cases Against Dalit Protesters: Jignesh Mevani to Gujarat CM

Dalit leader and Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani on Tuesday, 4 June, met Chief Minister Vijay Rupani and Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja and demanded withdrawal of criminal cases registered against Dalits during their agitation following the public flogging of seven Dalits in Una, three years ago.

He also sought protection for around 600 Dalit beneficiaries in Kutch who have got farm land under the Agricultural Land Ceiling (ALC) Act.

Leading a delegation of his team members, Mevani first met Jadeja and put forth his demands. Mevani said that during the meeting, Jadeja told him that he would do the needful regarding the demands, but he should also speak to the CM since such decisions are being taken by the latter.

5. 30-Year-Old Man Arrested for Voyeurism in Vadodara

A complaint was lodged with the Gotri police station of Vadodara on Monday, 3 June after a 30-year-old man was caught taking videos and photos of women at the swimming pool. Gotri police took action in the matter on Tuesday by arresting the accused.

The accused has been identified as Akash Patel, a resident of Arth Somnath Society, located on Gotri-Vasna road. According to police officials, on Monday, an application was submitted to the Gotri police station by 50 women of Vilanna Bungalow Scheme alleging that Patel who stays exactly opposite to Vilanna Bungalow's swimming pool had been taking videos and photos of women while they were using the swimming pool for the past six months.

When the women confronted Patel about the issue, a verbal dispute broke out between the two parties and during that, Patel threatened to upload the videos on social media.
