1. Bhim Army Chief Warns Guj Govt on Dalit ‘Atrocities’

Criticising the BJP government in Gujarat over the recent incidents of wedding processions of Dalits being stopped by some sections of the society, Bhim Army founder Chandrashekhar Azad on Friday, 17 May, issued a warning saying such atrocities will no longer be tolerated.

Talking to reporters here, Azad said 'jungle raj' is prevailing in Gujarat as members of the Scheduled Caste (SC) community are deprived of their fundamental rights given by the Constitution.

"I came to Gujarat because many incidents of atrocities on Dalits have happened recently. It seems that Constitutional provisions do not apply in Gujarat. Article 15 of the Constitution, which protects all the citizens from discrimination, has been removed by the Gujarat government," said Azad alias Ravan.

Not just for taking out wedding processions, Dalits in Gujarat were persecuted for keeping moustache and suffixing 'Sinh' in their names, he said.

2. Student Fakes Income Docs, School Finds Him in a Bungalow

At a time when the state government is struggling with the implementation of Right To Education (RTE) Act in the state, there are some who are misleading the schools to gain benefit out of the Act. The school has cancelled the admission of the student after the Gujarat High court, in its order in April, observed that the income certificate submitted by the parents was not genuine and kept it open for the students to seek admission afresh.

As per case details, in 2016, Kiranbhai Bharvad sought admission for his son under RTE stating that he resides at Bharvad Vas in Makarba village and that he belongs to OBC with income less than Rs 1,00,000.

4. Minority School Moves to Gujarat High Court Against RTE Admissions

The Gujarat High Court on Friday, 17 May, sought a response from the state education department after a minority school moved the court alleging that the state government is exerting pressure on it to grant admissions to poor children under the Right to Education (RTE) Act.

The single-judge bench of Justice Biren Vaishnav issued notice to officials of the education department directing them to file their reply in the case by 21 June.

The petitioner trust, Kachchh Christian Charitable Trust, which operates St Andrews School, has challenged the 10 May order of the district primary education officer (DPEO) by which the school was directed to admit students under RTE. It is the contention of the school that it is a minority institution and therefore, it does not come under the purview of RTE as has been held by the Supreme Court.
