1. Pepsico to Withdraw Cases Against Potato Farmers in Gujarat

US-based food and beverages giant PepsiCo on Thursday said that it will withdraw lawsuits against farmers in Arvalli and Sabarkantha district of Gujarat. Earlier during the day, farmers' welfare organisations had demanded unconditional withdrawal of cases. These organisations have claimed a moral victory, but said that they are awaiting a formal communication from the company.

2. Ishrat Jahan Case: Charges Dropped Against Gujarat Former Police Officers DG Vanzara, NK Amin

A CBI court on Thursday dropped the proceedings against retired Gujarat police officers DG Vanzara and NK Amin in the Ishrat Jahan encounter case.

Special judge JK Pandya pronounced the judgment, saying that the probe agency couldn’t get the required sanction to prosecute the officers.

A day after a court in Ahmedabad issued summons to Congress president Rahul Gandhi for his comments defaming BJP chief Amit Shah, a court in Surat on Thursday issued summons to him in response to a criminal defamation suit filed by a BJP MLA for his "how come all thieves have Modi as common surname" remark.

Surat's chief judicial magistrate BH Kapadia has directed him to appear before the court on 7 June.

4. First Arrest in Toor Dal Scam – Food Grader ‘Who Took Bribes to Clear Quality Control’

Junagadh district police on Thursday arrested a 21-year-old food grader who was allegedly bribed for clearing the quality control test of adulterated toor dal (pigeon pea) sold to the state government.

The arrest of Faizal Mughal from his residence in Junagadh is first in the Rs 30 lakh toor daal scam that came to light at Keshod market last week.

5. Singing, Mimicry Among Acts Banned in Ahmedabad for 14 Days

Singing, playing instruments and mimicry among certain acts in public that may result in “toppling the state” or violation of security have been prohibited by the Ahmedabad police commissioner in the city from 7 May to 21 May.

The notification to this effect dated 2 May was issued under the provisions of the Criminal Procedure Code and the power vested by the Gujarat Police Act.
