1. Neighbour Rapes 4-Year-Old Girl in Vadaj

A 28-year-old man was arrested for raping a four-year-old girl from his neighbourhood in Vadaj area of the city. The accused in the case, Amar Solanki, was known to the victim and her family. On Tuesday afternoon, Solanki promised puris to the girl, if she would step into his home.

The girl was with her four-year-old cousin who was sent home by Solanki. The cousin rushed home and told the survivor’s mother that Solanki had the little girl lie on bed and was doing something suspicious with her.

The girl’s mother banged on Solanki’s door, who first replied that the girl is not at home. But when the mother threatened to call cops he opened the door. When the mother asked the girl what had happened, she was told that Solanki made her lie on bed and proceeded to pinch her privates and had intercourse with her.

Vadaj police booked Solanki for rape under various sections of Protection of Children Against Sexual Offences Act (POCSO).

9-Year-Old Girl Killed by Leopard in Dahod

A nine-year-old girl was mauled to death by a leopard in Dumka forest area in Dahod district of Gujarat on Wednesday, a forest department official said. Ashwanita, daughter of Gordhanbhai Pasaya of Kotli village, was attacked by the animal when she had gone to the forest to collect firewood with some women.

Deputy Conservator of Forests J L Zala said. "Other women escaped as the leopard attacked her," Zala said. The mauled body of the victim was found 20-30 metres away from the spot where the girl was attacked, he said. Forest officials have set cages with bait in the area to trap the leopard, Zala added.

Honour Killing Threat: Protection Ordered for Couple

The Gujarat High Court directed Patan police to provide adequate protection to a newly-wed couple. Dharti Nayi and Jagdish Prajapati, both residents of Patan in North Gujarat and got married on 20 October. The girl’s family however, has issues with the union due to difference in caste.

After the wedding the couple approached A-division police station in Patan, but the cops did not act. Ten days later the couple approached the high court.

The additional public prosecutor urged the court “to pass an appropriate order bearing in mind incidents of honour killing and considering the factum of the marriage of both the petitioners without wish and will of the family members of petitioner no.1 (the girl).”

The HC made the police inspector personally responsible for executing the protection order.

Guj Govt Announces New Relief Measures for Drought Hit Areas

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani called for a cabinet meeting to discuss possible solutions to combat drought situation in the state. The cabinet made concrete decisions to improve conditions for livestock husbandry, water supply to dry areas and on employment generation under MNREGA.

Provision will be made to for an additional seven crore kg of cattle fodder. Arrangement for five crore kg of fodder has been made thus far. The Cabinet also decided that if the farmer agrees to grow fodder where water is available the state will provide special power connections.

The government is also cracking down on theft of water from Narmada Canals. So for 37 FIRs have been lodged in recent weeks.

Garbage Segregation Mandatory From December

The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation has put its foot down and declared that it will not collect garbage that has not been segregated into wet and dry waste. Several attempts were made by the civic body to ensure waste segregation happens at source, but failed nonetheless.

Earlier this year the AMC had introduced segregation of waste at source on a pilot basis in two wards- Naranpura and Bodakdev- but the project failed due to lack of awareness.

Senior AMC officials have said that they have assigned one youth for every 50 houses and their job is to educate and create awareness about waste segregation. The date for implementing mandatory segregation of waste is being worked out and will be declared soon.
