1. City Records Season's Highest Temperature of 44.3 Degrees Celsius

The sweltering weather conditions prevalent in the city for the past few days was at its worst on Wednesday, 29 May, with Ahmedabad recording the seasons highest maximum temperature of 44.3 degrees Celsius surpassing Tuesday's 43.8 degrees Celsius.

What is even worse is the fact that the Met office has ruled out chances of any relief during the next 3-4 days, with the maximum temperature likely to remain around 43-44 degrees Celsius.

The weather office has also issued an orange alert and heatwave warning, advising citizens to refrain from venturing out in the open during the peak hours of 11 am to 4 pm and drink a lot of fluids.

Also, citizens have been urged to wear loose cotton clothes and cover their head with a cloth or an umbrella while venturing out.

2. Unclaimed Narcotics Worth Rs 15 Crore Recovered in Kutch

Three packets containing narcotic drugs worth Rs 15 crore, which were found lying unclaimed near an island in an uninhabited creek area in western Kutch, were recovered, the Special Operations Group (SOG) of Kutch district police said on Wednesday, 29 May.

This comes a week after 194 packets of illicit drugs were recovered from a Pakistani vessel, which was intercepted and brought to Jakhau (Kutch) on the Gujarat coast.

"The police have increased vigil in the creek area near the International Maritime boundary line (IMBL) on the suspicion that drug carriers had thrown some drug packets in the Arabian sea before they were apprehended by the Indian agencies in the recent times," a release issued by the SOG of Kutch-West division

3. Panel Refers 50% Fee Revision Cases to FRC

In a major setback to schools, the Fee Revision Committee has referred over 50 per cent appeals filed by schools seeking revision of their fee structure to the Fee Regulatory Committee.

Unhappy with the order passed by the Fee Regulatory Committee, formed as per the Gujarat Self-Financed (Regulation of Fees) Act, a total of 214 schools across the state had filed appeal with the Fee Revision Committee, seeking changes in their fee structure ascertained by the FRC.

However, the fee regulatory committee has rejected appeals of 78 schools and have remanded (referred) nearly 128 schools back to the FRC.

An official from the education department dealing with the appeals said, "The response has been quite good. As against number of schools in the state, only 214 have come to the revision committee. This shows that most of the schools are happy with the FRC order."

4. Court Convicts Two Cattle Owners for Leaving Bovines on Road

In a first such conviction in Gujarat, a local court sentenced two cattle owners to imprisonment for leaving their bovines on the public road in Vadodara in 2017, for which the Vadodara Municipal Corporation had pressed charges against them for negligence.

The case was part of a massive drive undertaken by the VMC in that year to end the menace of cattle on the streets. The court has also slapped the accused, Alpesh Rabari and Hitesh Rabari, with a fine of Rs 5000 each.

The VMC had filed its complaint under Indian Penal Code (IPC) section 308, which lays down provisions for attempting to culpable homicide not amounting to murder.

Both convicts have been sentenced to three months of simple imprisonment.

5. 11th Extension for High Security Registration Plates, New Deadline 31 Aug

The state government has for the eleventh time has decided to extend the deadline for installation of high security registration plates (HSRP) in old vehicles. The last date for HSRP fitting is now 31 August.

The transport commissioner in a release said that this is the last and final extension, and anyone found without an HSRP number plate from 1 September will be penalised.

As per a notification by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, installation of HSRP is mandatory for all vehicles registered from 16 November, 2012. While high security number plates are pre-fitted on new vehicles from April 2019, the old ones that were sold before the notification came into effect have to get these number plates installed.
