1. Five Unemployed Surat Diamond Polishers Held for Printing Fake Notes

The Special Operations Group (SOG) of the Vadodara police on Friday arrested five unemployed diamond polishers from Surat for printing and circulating fake notes. The accused were identified as Sanjay Parmar (22), who printed the notes on the terrace of his own house and supplied the notes to others including Ashish Surani (25), Kuldeep Raval (22), Abhishek Mangukia (23) and Vishal Surani (25), all residents of Surat.

The accused said they have been unemployed for over three months due to the ongoing recession in the diamond industry. Sanjay and Ashish learnt to print fake notes from You-Tube videos and later circulated them in markets and distributed them amongst their friends, the police said.

2. Ahmedabad Gets New Police Commissioner

IPS officer and Director General of Police (DGP), CID, Crime and Railways, Ashish Bhatia, has been appointed the police commissioner of Ahmedabad city.

The post fell vacant after former city police commissioner AK Singh was promoted as the Director General of National Security Guards (NSG) in New Delhi. A notification from Nikhil Bhatt, the additional secretary of Gujarat Home Department Friday read that Bhatia has been appointed as the police commissioner of Ahmedabad after the post fell vacant due to the appointment of AK Singh as DG of NSG.

An IPS officer of 1985 batch, 57-year-old Bhatia, a native of Haryana, has served various crucial posts in the Gujarat police machinery in the past 20 years.

3. SC to Hear Guj HC Advocates’ Body on Elevation of Bombay HC Judge Justice Akil Kureshi

The Supreme Court on Friday, 25 October said it will hear on 4 November the plea of the Gujarat High Court's bar body seeking a direction to the Centre to implement the decision of the apex court Collegium on elevation of Bombay High Court judge Justice Akil Kureshi as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.

A bench, headed by Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, was told by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta that he has received instructions from the central government in the matter and urged that the plea of the Gujarat High Court's bar body be heard on November 4 after the Diwali break.

The bench, which also comprised justices SA Bobde and SA Nazeer, accepted the request.

4. 2008 Mumbai Terror Attack: Gujarat HC Gives Govt More Time to Pay Compensation to Kuber Crew Member’s Widow

The Gujarat High Court (HC) on Friday, 25 October granted the state government time till November 11 to comply with the court’s earlier order of 22 October wherein it had directed it to pay a compensation of Rs 5 lakh by Friday to the widow of a fisherman whom terrorists are presumed to have killed after hijacking the trawler “Kuber” used for the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.

The court of Justice Bhargav Karia on Tuesday, 22 October said that the compensation be sanctioned within 48 hours of the order.

The court had further specified that if there is no contingency fund, the compensation may then be paid from the Chief Minister’s fund. However, on Friday, the state government prayed for time to comply with the court’s order so as to verify that the petitioner’s late husband was indeed part of the Kuber trawler.

The state government also submitted that once verification is done, the amount payable to the widow shall be released immediately.

5. Gujarat-Based Architecture Firm Wins Consultancy Bid for Central Vista Revamp

Gujarat-based architecture firm HCP Designs has won the consultancy bid for the Centre's ambitious project to redevelop the Central Vista, including Parliament and Rajpath, and develop a Common Central Secretariat for various ministries, Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri said on Friday, 25 October.

The firm, which will be paid Rs 229.75 crore for consultancy services, will prepare the master plan of the project, including designs, cost estimation, landscape and traffic integration plans, and parking facilities among others, he said at a press conference.

HCP Design, Planning and Management Pvt Ltd, based in Ahmedabad, is led by architect Bimal Patel and has developed several projects, including the Sabarmati Riverfront Development where Prime Minister Narendra Modi recently held a mammoth event to celebrate Mahatma Gandhi's 150th birth anniversary.

It has also developed the Central Vista at Gandhinagar and the Mumbai Port Complex.
