1. Heavy Rains Likely in Saurashtra & North Gujarat
Heavy rains are likely at isolated places in the districts of Saurashtra and north Gujarat on Tuesday, 18 June, the weather department said on Monday, 17 June. Heavy rains are also likely in Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.
Rains will continue in the city till Thursday, (20 June). Friday (21 June) onwards, the sky will be cloudy with less likelihood of rains. On Monday, 58 talukas of the state received rains, according to state Revenue Department. Parts of Ahmedabad city also received showers.
India Meteorological Department (IMD) said in a forecast on Monday that the Deep Depression over north-east Arabian Sea and neighbouring areas had moved east-north-eastwards and is likely to move further towards the coast of Kutch.
On Monday evening it was about 190 km west-southwest of Naliya, 175 km west-southwest of Dwarka and 270 km west-southwest of Bhuj.

2. Separate Gujarat Rajya Sabha By-Polls: Congress Moves Supreme Court
The Gujarat Congress on Monday, 17 June, moved a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Election Commission of India (ECI)’s decision to conduct separate by-elections for two Rajya Sabha seats that fell vacant after the election of BJP president Amit Shah and Union Minister Smriti Irani to the Lok Sabha. The notification for the election to be held on 5 July, is scheduled to be issued on Tuesday, 18 June.
The petition, filed by Paresh Dhanani, Leader of Opposition in Gujarat Assembly, is likely to be mentioned Tuesday morning before a vacation bench of the Supreme Court for urgent hearing.
Seeking that the ECI’s 15 June notification be set aside, Dhanani in his petition has sought that the ECI be directed to “expeditiously hold simultaneous elections against the vacancies created in the Rajya Sabha due to the election of Amit Shah and Smriti Irani to the Lok Sabha, in accordance with the provisions of the Representation of People’s Act 1951 (RP Act)”.

3. Bengal Hospital Violence: 28,000 Doctors Across State Join IMA Strike in Gujarat
Around 28,000 doctors across the state joined the strike called by Indian Medical Association (IMA) on Monday, 17 June, in solidarity with their West Bengal counterparts who have been protesting for the last seven days.
Dr Mehul Shah, vice president of IMA, Gujarat, said, “We requested all our 8,000 members of Ahmedabad Medical Association (AMA) to participate in the 24-hour strike till 6 am Tuesday. We also requested all private hospitals as well as small and medium nursing homes to suspend all routine work with respect to OPDs (Out Patient Departments) and keep only emergency facilities running. No patient requiring immediate attention must suffer.”
He added they sat on a dharna on 13 June, after which they submitted a representation at the Ahmedabad police commissioner’s office in Shahibaug. “We have sought protection of private hospital doctors and medical students and their response has been positive.”

4. Villagers Demand Jobs at Dinosaur Museum, Submit Memo
More than a week after Chief Minister Vijay Rupani inaugurated the dinosaur museum in Raiyoli village of Mahisagar district, close to the site of the dinosaur fossils — the third largest hatchery in the world — villagers have registered a protest with the district administration seeking ‘all jobs’ for local people at the museum.
In a memorandum submitted to the local mamlatdar last week, the sarpanch of Raiyoli demanded that all employees of the museum who have been hired from outside be “removed with immediate effect”.
The villagers contended that although the government had promised to give employment to the local youth at the time of acquiring land for the museum in the year 2000, the promise was not kept.

5. Nigerian Gang Exploited 4 Banks' Lack of Verification
Four banks — Kotak 811, RBL, Catholic Syrian and IDFC — have landed in trouble for their failure to physically verify customers under whose names dummy accounts were being opened that has led to over 56 people being duped out of over Rs 2 crore.
However, cyber crime cell of Ahmedabad police has deduced that over 4,727 accounts holders' details have already been phished by Nigerian cyber criminals who use it to create dummy accounts and siphon money out of India.
The cyber crime cell has now served notices to these four banks for their serious oversight and also drawn the attention of the national banking regulator to look into the banks' flawed e-verification practices.
JM Jadav, ACP of the cyber cell said, "We have issued notices to Kotak 811, RBL, Catholic Syrian and IDFC banks after it was revealed that the Nigerian scammers were making dummy bank accounts for siphoning out money taken from the victims."
