1. Cyclone Vayu No Longer a Threat, May Return to Kutch on June 17
Gujarat can finally heave a sigh of relief after Cyclone Vayu failed to make landfall in the state and just skirted it. Though IMD informed on Thursday, 13 June that the cyclone had sidestepped the state, it had warned of heavy winds and rains for the state and as a result the state had continued to be on the alert.
However, the relief is likely to be short lived. IMD officials said that Cyclone Vayu is likely to recurve and hit the Kutch coast of Gujarat. "Vayu is likely to recurve on June 16 and hit Kutch between 17-18 June," M Rajeevan, secretary of the Ministry of Earth Sciences, told agencies.
He however said the intensity of the cyclone is likely to get reduced. He added that it may hit the coast as a cyclonic storm or a deep depression. He said the Gujarat government has been alerted about the possible recurvature of the cyclonic storm.
On Friday, Chief Minister Vijay Rupani officially announced that Vaayu was no longer a threat as it had moved westward.

2. Custodial Death of ‘Thief’ in Gujarat: 2 of 8 Cops on the Run Surrender
Two out of eight policemen who had been on the run after being booked for the custodial death of a suspected thief surrendered on Friday, 14 June before Surat police. Probationer Police Sub Inspector CP Chaudhary and Constable Haresh Chaudhary were arrested in the afternoon on surrendering.
“We have arrested two accused policemen in the custodial death incident, while six others are still absconding,” Surat Police Commissioner Satish Sharma said.
“We have formed a team headed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Special branch of Surat Police, Chintan Teraiya, and are hoping that the remaining accused will be arrested soon.”

3.Gujarat Topper an Ahmedabad Girl Shabnam Sahay, Leads All Girls in JEE (Advanced)
A 17-year-old-girl from the city has made Gujarat proud by not only making it to top 10 All India Rank in the Joint Entrance Examination (Advanced) but she is also the top ranked female.
Shabnam Sahay who scored 308 marks out of 371 has got AIR 10 and of the total 5356 female qualified candidates, she is the top ranked female. Speaking to the media, she said she had not expected this rank.
A student of Ahmedabad International School, Shabnam is the daughter of a professor of the Indian Institute of Management here (IIMA). She has not yet decided which stream she wants to pursue. She said she would play piano and dance to relieve her stress.
The results of JEE (Advanced) 2019 were announced by the Indian Institute of Technology-Roorkee on Friday, with Gupta Kartikey Chandresh of Maharashtra emerging as the topper.

4. Medical Admission: Gujarat-Born Students Do Not Need to Show Domicile Papers, Says Govt
Students, who are born in Gujarat and have cleared their Class X and XII examinations from the state, have been exempted from producing domicile certificates, said Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel on Friday, 14 June, while announcing that the admission process for MBBS, dental, ayurveda, homeopathy and naturopathy seats have been made online.
“Last year several students faced a lot of problems while trying to get domicile certificates. Keeping those difficulties in mind, we have exempted the students, who are born in Gujarat and have passed their 10th and 12th grade exams from the five recognised boards in Gujarat, from producing domicile certificate from this year onwards,” Patel said, while addressing mediapersons in Gandhinagar Friday.

5. Gujarat Doctors Protest Against Attack on Colleagues in Bengal
Doctors in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Surat on Friday, 14 June, joined the nationwide protest in solidarity against the attack on their colleagues in West Bengal. They submitted memoranda to the state authorities, seeking a special Central legislation for the safety of doctors on duty.
In Ahmedabad, around 700 doctors held a march on Ashram Road and submitted a memorandum, addressed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, to the district collector, said Gujarat State Secretary of Indian Medical Association (IMA) Kamlesh Saini.
The memorandum read, “There should be strong policy initiatives, strong legislation and supportive mechanisms to combat hospital violence… Central legislation in the form of a special law is mandatory in our country.”
