A plantation owner allegedly locked up a daily wage worker inside a cage with three dogs in a village in Karnataka’s Madikeri area after the farmer failed to repay Rs 4,000 loan.

Harish, 32, sustained severe injuries as the plantation owner’s pet dogs brutally attacked him while he was locked inside the cage, Times of India reported.

Kishan, the owner of a coffee plantation in Balele village, got together with his associate Madhu and allegedly forced Harish into a cage. “Harish used to work in Kishan’s plantation earlier. After he was put inside the cage, he was bitten by three dogs on his head, legs, neck and hands,” SI Mahesh, with the Ponnampet Police, said.

According to the police, Harish had borrowed Rs 4,000 from Kishan a few months ago but failed to repay the loan. “He had stopped working for Kishan very recently and had started working at his relative’s shop in the village. On 29 August, Kishan and Madhu went to Harish’s work place and demanded that he repay the loan,” SI Mahesh added.

Harish then told Kishan and Madhu that he had no money. Angered by his response, the duo dragged Harish out of the shop, shoved him into their jeep and drove away.

“Kishan and Madhu drove back to the plantation and pushed Harish into the cage which had three dogs. After a while, the dogs attacked Harish. Scared that he may end up dead, Kishan and Madhu pulled him out and dropped him near the Gonikoppalu community health centre,” he said.

Harish was given first aid and sent to Mysuru for treatment as he had sustained grievous injuries after the attack. Harish returned home after being treated on 2 September and he immediately approached the police and narrated the brutality he had suffered at the hands of Kishan and Madhu.

A case of attempted murder has been filed.
