Kovind Becomes Second President to Visit Siachen Base Camp

Kovind’s visit comes after the then president APJ Abdul Kalam travelled to Siachen in 2004.

President Ram Nath Kovind reached the Siachen base camp in Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday, 10 May, to interact with soldiers posted there, an official statement said on Wednesday, 9 May.

Kovind’s visit comes after the then president APJ Abdul Kalam travelled to Siachen in 2004.

Siachen is considered the highest battlefield in the world.

"He will be the first president to visit this camp since the visit of the then president APJ Abdul Kalam in 2004. The president will also visit the Kumar Post," a statement issued by Rashtrapati Bhavan said prior to the visit.

In 2004 Kalam became the first Indian President to visit the Siachen glacier, according to NDTV.
