A woman in south Kolkata’s Garia was caught on camera while brutally assaulting her mother-in-law. The elderly woman was seemingly plucking flowers outside her house when her daughter-in-law began raining blows on her.

A case has been lodged against the perpetrator and she has been taken into police custody. The accused has been identified as Swapna Pal (40) and the victim as Jashoda Pal (75).

The incident was captured by a neighbour on video, and was uploaded on Facebook by a Rontu Sengupta on 29 May. A police official who spoke to The Quint highlighted the events that led to Pal’s arrest.

The official said that the matter came to the police’s attention after a cop from the Bansdroni police station, Subhra Chakraborty, came across the video online and alerted his superiors.

Police then contacted Sengupta over Facebook, but he refused to divulge how he got hold of the video. After meeting Sengupta in person and counselling him, the police learned that he had received the video from a WhatsApp forward.

The official further said that the video had been shared by 27 people before it reached Sengupta. Eventually, the person who had shot the video was located and the police could confirm the incident and nab the perpetrator.

Kolkata Police, on their official Facebook page, shared more details surrounding the incident. The victim, Jashoda, suffers from amnesia and was subjected to physical abuse on a daily basis.
