Shivakumar Hospitalised in B’luru After Complaint of Chest Pain

The Enforcement Directorate on Friday, 25 October filed an appeal in the Supreme Court against the Delhi High Court order granting bail to Congress leader DK Shivakumar, arrested in connection with a money-laundering case being probed by the ED.

The Delhi HC on Wednesday had granted bail to the Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar on a personal bond of Rs 25 lakh in connection with a money laundering case. Shivakumar, who was in judicial custody was released from Tihar jail on Wednesday night.

Shivakumar Hospitalised in Bengaluru After Complaint of Chest Pain

Senior Congress leader DK Shivakumar, who returned to Bengaluru on 26 October from Delhi after getting bail in a money laundering case, has been hospitalised after he complained of back and chest pain, party sources said on Saturday, 2 November, PTI reported.

"He had high blood pressure and low sugar. He had also complained of back pain and chest pain following which he was hospitalised on Friday evening at Apollo Hospital in Seshadripuram. He is undergoing treatment," Shivakumar's personal assistant, Thyagaraj told PTI.

On Friday, he had gone to attend a function organised by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, where he complained of some giddiness following which he was admitted to the hospital.

The Congress leader had taken part in various events ever since his release from a Delhi prison in the money laundering case, which had a negative effect on his health, he added.

Shivakumar was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) on 3 September in the money laundering case and walked out of the Tihar Jail in New Delhi on Wednesday evening, after the Delhi High Court granted him a bail.

Delhi High Court on Wednesday, 23 October, granted bail to Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar on a personal bond of Rs 25 lakh in connection with a money laundering case.

Justice Suresh Kait granted relief to the Congress leader saying that Shivakumar is not a flight risk, PTI reported.

The judge also said that Shivakumar cannot tamper with evidence as documents are with investigating agencies and there is no material to show he has influenced witnesses.

Delhi HC Likely to Pronounce Order on Shivakumar's Bail Plea Today

The Delhi High Court is likely to pronounce on Wednesday, 23 October, its order on the bail plea of Karnataka Congress leader DK Shivakumar in a money laundering case.

Justice Suresh Kait had reserved the order on 17 October on the leader's bail plea in which he claimed that the case was a result of political rivalry and there was not enough evidence against him.

Shivakumar, 57, was arrested by the ED on 3 September in the money laundering case. He is lodged in Tihar jail under judicial custody. He has challenged the trial court's order denying him bail in the case.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) had opposed his bail plea saying he was an influential person and, if released, he could tamper with evidence and influence witnesses.

HC Takes Exception to Non-Availability of ED's Lawyer, Says Agency Can't Play 'Hide-and-Seek'

The Delhi High Court on Thursday castigated the Enforcement Directorate for non-availability of its counsel to argue on bail the plea of DK Shivakumar, arrested in a money laundering case, and said that the agency cannot play "hide and seek" with the court.

Justice Suresh Kait slammed the ED's counsel, who appeared in the matter and sought accommodation for 30 minutes on the ground that the law officer who would argue the case was busy in Rouse Avenue district court, reported PTI.

"You cannot play hide and seek with the court," Justice Kait said, adding, "This is not acceptable. Court is not supposed to wait."

The high court reserved its order on Shivakumar's plea seeking bail and asked the ED's counsel to file their written submissions by 12 pm on 19 October.

Shivakumar's lawyer advocate AM Singhvi rebutted, saying his health condition is very serious and he was very close to a heart attack. He also told the court that his medical condition does not allow him to be kept in any kind of custody.

ED Files Its Reply on DK Shivakumar’s Bail Plea in Special Court

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Monday, 16 September, filed its reply on Congress leader DK Shivakumar’s bail plea in a special court, reported ANI. The reply said “During custodial interrogation, he didn't cooperate despite direct documentary evidences linking him with proceeds of crime in the case.”

The ED, in its reply, also stated that the investigation has revealed names of various persons/entities. "The interrogation of these persons is necessary to take the case to a logical conclusion. If granted bail, there exists all likelihood that he will hamper with investigation and influence the said persons."

Senior Congress Leaders Meet DK Shivakumar in Hospital

On Wednesday afternoon, Congress General Secretary, AICC, KC Venugopal met DK Shivakumar at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi. Venugopal was accompanied by Shivakumar’s brother DK Suresh. Earlier, the police had denied permission to the senior leaders to visit the former minister.

Several protests were reported across the state. In Kanankapura in the outskirts of the city protesters set a bus on fire, while in Bengaluru’s MG road, Congress workers blocked the road in protest.

'Clear Case of Political Vendetta by BJP': KC Venugopal on Shivakumar's Arrest

Congress General Secretary, AICC, KC Venugopal, in a statement, called DK Shivakumar’s arrest a “clear case of political vendetta by the fascist BJP government”.

He also called investigating agencies like ED and CBI “puppets” of the government and accused them of overlooking alleged cases against BJP leaders in the state.

“It is evident that the government is desperately trying to hide its outright failure in checking the economic slowdown and financial crisis by shamelessly harassing its political opponents,” he said in a statement tweeted by Congress’ Twitter account.

He also said the series of events started when DK Shivakumar gave accommodation to Gujarat MLAs. Kharge added that “Fadnavis also gave accommodation to Karnataka MLAs recently. But will there be action against him?”

The Congress leader stated that Shivakumar has been attending all questioning sessions and asked what was the need to arrest him.

DK Shivakumar Hospitalised After Arrest; Congress Leader Claims Health Deteriorated Due to Harassment

After his arrest DK Shivakumar was admitted to Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in New Delhi as he complained of uneasiness.

Youth Congress President Srinivas BV, on Wednesday, alleged that Shivakumar’s health deteriorated because of the harassment that the Congress leader faced over the last few days.

“His health has deteriorated due to the harassment he has been subjected to. Doctors have advised him to rest but Enforcement Directorate (ED) is trying to take him away,” BV Srinivas, Youth Congress President told ANI after meeting Shivakumar at the RML hospital.

"It is just an attempt to divert the attention from structural failures of @BJP4India govt & also to prevent the voices of dissent. @DKShivakumar is also a victim of their vindictive politics," he said in a series of tweets.

Shivakumar would definitely come out clean and the whole country would understand the "ulterior motives" of the BJP, he said.

"We are all with him in this difficult times & shall provide him with full support," the Congress legislature party leader said.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa said law will take its own course and said he would be the happiest if the former minister came clear.

Yediyurappa said they were not happy about Shivakumar's arrest.

“I pray to God that he should come out from every thing. I have neither hated any one in my life, nor have I wished bad for any one. Law will take its course. If he comes out (of the charges) I will be more happy than any one,” the chief minister told reporters.

Congress Leader DK Shivakumar Arrested by ED

Congress leader DK Shivakkumar was arrested on Tuesday, 3 September, by Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering case.

After his arrest, supporters of the Congress leader gathered outside the ED office in Delhi in large numbers.

One of them even broke into tears and tore off his clothes outside the RML hospital. The Karnataka Congress has now called for a statewide protest on Wednesday.

Shivakumar’s supporters also staged protests in Kanakapura, in the outskirts of Bangalore, where he is a sitting MLA.

Sources told The Quint that Shivakumar is likely to remain in Dr. Ram Manohar Lohia (RML) hospital after he complained of ill health.

“I congratulate my BJP friends for finally being successful in their mission of arresting me,” Shivakumar said in tweet.

The Karnataka unit of Congress and the Youth Congress also slammed the arrest of Shivakumar, a troubleshooter for the party and said they stood by the leader.

The Congress, in their tweet, called his arrest “vendetta politics” by the BJP.
