Twenty-two traders in Kanpur were slapped with a criminal case after they put up posters and hoarding that compared Prime Minister Narendra Modi with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un.

A Hindustan Times report said that the traders were highlighting the issue of a deluge of small coins after banks refused to deposit them “stating lack of chests” for storage.

The police also arrested Praveen Kumar for installing the hoardings and filed an FIR under under section 32 (3) of UP Special Powers Act, section 153A and section 505 of IPC. The Sub-Inspector told HT that others will also be nabbed soon.

The hoarding had Kim Jong-un declare he will destroy the world and Modi saying: “I will bring an end to businesses”.

The report said that there are about Rs 200 crore coins in circulation in Kanpur and traders are forced to pay their employees’ salaries in coins.

Traders’ association leader Raju Khanna, who’s also been named in the case, said that they wanted to bring the issue to UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s notice after the district administration failed to resolve their problem.

“Traders are exchanging coins at 25 percent of their value under the ‘batta system’ to get currency notes to keep their businesses afloat. Now, it is hurting us badly,” he told HT.

Raju’s association reportedly represents traders whose products cost less than Rs 10, and are thus paid in coins.
