United States President Joe Biden will hold a bilateral meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the sidelines of his visit to Japan for the second in-person QUAD summit, US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said on Wednesday, 18 May.

Biden's trip to South Korea and Japan has been scheduled from 20 May to 24 May.

Talking to reporters on Wednesday, Sullivan said, “We believe that this summit will demonstrate both in substance and in vision that democracies can deliver and that these four nations working together will defend and uphold the principles of a free and open Indo-Pacific," news agency PTI reported.

Biden will also be launching an economic arrangement in Tokyo called the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF) which is capable of resolving economic issues, Sullivan said, PTI reported.

PM Modi will join him in launching the economic initiative, while other leaders will be present virtually.

'American Leadership' With Like-Minded Allies

Sullivan added, "On security and economics, on technology and energy, on investment in infrastructure, we think this trip is going to put on full display President Biden's Indo-Pacific strategy and that it will show in living colour that the United States can at once lead the free world in responding to Russia's war in Ukraine, and at the same time, chart a course for effective, principled American leadership and engagement in a region that will define much of the future of the 21st century."

The IPEF framework will supposedly help building the structure for a digital economy and ensure its security, he added.

"Today, Finland and Sweden submitted their applications for NATO membership. President Biden has welcomed those applications, and he looks forward to working with NATO Allies and with Congress on a swift accession process."
US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan.

Sullivan further defined "American leadership" with like-minded partners and allies as world-changing and powerful.
