A quack allegedly severed the genitals of a newborn in order to prove that the baby boy was indeed a girl, reported The Indian Express. The newborn died soon after.

The incident took place late at night on Tuesday, 24 April in the Chatra district of Jharkhand. The quack has been identified as Anuj Kumar.

A doctor at Jay Prakash Nursing Home had suggested a caesarean which cost Rs 10,000. Anil Panda, father of the deceased infant, had deposited a part of the total amount and the operation was carried out on his wife Gudia Devi, reported The Indian Express.

Only a little ahead of the baby’s delivery, the quack had conducted an ultrasound on the mother and told her it was a girl. On discovering that the newborn was actually a boy, the quack cut the baby’s genitals and told the family that a girl was born with deformities.

Following their child’s death, the parents filed a complaint. However, by the time the police reached the nursing home on Wednesday morning, the quack, identified as Anuj Kumar, had already fled. The police has sealed the clinic and launched a hunt for him, reported The Indian Express.

The doctor accused in the case did not have any registration or licence under the PNDT Act.
Chatra Civil Surgeon Dr SP Singh informed The Indian Express.

Dr Singh also said that he does not recall receiving a notice to shut down the nursing home for not having the necessary documents.
