Tensions in Jammu and Kashmir flared as Section 144 of the CrPC was imposed in Jammu and Srinagar from Monday, 5 August, onward.

With multiple political leaders – Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti – among others placed under house arrest and mobile internet services suspended, Twitter has been abuzz with messages of support for all residents of Jammu and Kashmir.

Twitterati have, in solidarity with the residents of Kashmir, changed their profile pictures to a red background to protest the current situation in Kashmir. Social media users have also been using #IStandWithKashmir in order to showcase their stance on the situation in the region.

Residents in the picturesque state of Jammu and Kashmir have shared images of eerie deserted streets due to the imposition of section 144 of the CrPC.

Residents of the state have taken to social media to express their anger at not being made aware of the situation. A Twitter user said, “We in Kashmir are human beings, with lives of our own, school going kids, wage earning citizens, ill patients in hospitals et al. How on earth can we pushed to the edge and be told nothing at all?”

In what seems to be a brewing storm in the state, it is the residents that are going to suffer the most as daily life takes a beating till the government announces their next steps.
