The CCTV footage shows the couple sitting on a two-wheeler parked on a busy road, when the accused pulled up next to them and started attacking the man with a sickle. A bystander came to the man’s rescue by kicking the attacker in order to hinder the attack.

The incident occurred at around 3:30 pm on Wednesday, 19 September.

The victims were identified by The News Minute as Madhavi (20) and Sandeep (21), who got married in a temple about a week back.

Madhavi has suffered deep cuts on her neck and her condition is said to be critical while her husband Sandeep, who also suffered grievous injuries, is recovering.

Speaking to ANI, the doctor treating the couple said:

We suspect there is some vascular injury also and she has a fracture in the left hand as well as a laceration on the left side.

The doctors are currently monitoring her situation, after her left arm was nearly amputated, reported TNM.

The accused, Manohar Chari, who was absconding after the attack was arrested late Wednesday night, and has been charged with attempt to murder. A case has been registered against him under Section 307 (Attempt to murder) of the IPC and relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

The News Minute reported that Chari allegedly had a problem with his daughter marrying a Dalit man, and had allegedly asked the couple to meet him at Erragada, Gokul Theatre the day he attacked them.

Addressing the media after the arrest, West Zone DCP Srinivas AR said Chari was the sole person behind the attack, and was supposedly angered by his daughter’s decision to marry Sandeep.

A serious alcoholic, he had been “dangerously drunk” at the time of the incident, the DCP said. Chari also reportedly had “no intention to hurt Sandeep, and had only targeted his daughter.”

“He is a serious alcoholic. Chari had apparently been drinking for many days prior to this incident and was also drunk at the time of the incident. When we caught him, we found his blood alcohol content to be dangerously high," TNM reported the DCP as saying.

Meanwhile, the DCP also said that Chari had picked up the weapon from a coconut vendor’s shop, while the latter was away. Further details will be revealed as the investigation proceeds, he added.
