1. One More Arrested in Unnao Rape Case

The CBI on Sunday, 7 May, arrested a man in connection with the murder of the Unnao rape victim’s father last month. Shashi Pratap alias Suman Singh, 36, was produced before a Lucknow court, which sent him to four days’ police custody remand (PCR), said a CBI officer.

The agency sought to question him at length about his alleged involvement in the case.

Five persons are currently in Lucknow district jail in connection with the murder case. The accused include Bangarmau BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar’s brother Atul Singh, Vineet Mishra, Baua Singh, Shailu Singh and Sonu Singh.

“During investigation, it came to light that on 3 April when the victim (rape victim’s father) reached his native village, Shashi Pratap picked a fight with him for apparently no reason. Pratap was heavily drunk. During the scuffle Pratap called up Baua Singh, who was then with Atul Singh, and informed him that the victim had arrived in the village. He also told them that the victim was abusing the MLA and his brother,” said a CBI officer.

2. Man Held For Raping Blind Girl in Delhi

A 20-year-old visually impaired girl was allegedly raped by her neighbour at the former's house near Karol Bagh. The accused was arrested, police said.

According to police, when the girl's mother returned home after an errand, she saw her daughter crying in a corner. When asked what was wrong, the girl said that her neighbour had come home on the pretext of getting sugar and raped her.

The woman told cops that as her daughter was blind, she had taught her not to open the door unless it was someone known to her.

3. Fish Vendor Murdered in Puducherry

A 46-year-old fish vendor was hacked to death near Goubert Market in Puducherry around 4 am on Sunday, 6 May morning.

Police identified the deceased as Pandian, a resident of Kurusikuppam.

Pandian was on his way to the Goubert Market when a four-member gang on motorbikes attacked him with weapons at Ambour Salai. He died on the spot. On knowing about the murder, the fish vendors from the market blocked Ambour Salai and did not allow the police to remove the body to the Government General Hospital.

Local legislator K Lakshminarayanan and Senior Superintendent of Police (Law and Order) Apoorva Gupta tried to pacify the agitators but to no avail. They allowed the police to remove the body only after Chief Minister V Narayanasamy, who also arrived at the spot, assured of speedy action against the culprits.

4. Youth Held for Raping 6-Year-Old Girl in Saharanpur

Police on Sunday, 6 May, arrested a youth for allegedly raping a six-year-old girl in area falling under the jurisdiction of Janakpuri police station in Saharanpur. According to police, the accused is son of the landlord of the rape survivor’s family.

Police said the father of the girl lodged a complaint against one Kunal Singh, 22, on Saturday, 5 May evening accusing him of raping his daughter.

According to father, Singh had been taking his daughter to his room or bathroom to have oral sex with her.

Janakpuri police station SHO Satendra Sharma told TOI, “The family resides on the first floor of the building, while the accused lives on the ground floor. On Saturday, when the victim’s mother saw the accused taking her daughter inside the bathroom, she raised an alarm. Following which neighbours gathered and thrashed the accused.”

Police said the accused had been sent to jail.

5. Five Followers Nabbed for Pastor’s Murder

The Guntur Rural Police on Sunday, 6 May, claimed to have solved the mystery behind the murder of a pastor at Kolakaluru village in the district, by arresting five of his followers.

Guntur Rural SP Venkat Appalanaidu said the main accused, Arunbaka Rajesh, 37, had plotted the murder of Vunnam Subba Rao alias Daniel following a financial dispute.

The pastor was found dead in suspicious circumstances at his home on 24 April and the incident had created a sensation in the village.

The SP said that Rajesh, Vunnam Gopi, 20, Ponnaganti Pawan Kumar, 20, Suddapalli Prudhivi Raj, 23, and Kolakaluri Anandbabu, 30, confessed that they had killed the pastor by smothering him with a pillow.

6. ‘Insulted’ Before Girlfriend, Man and Aide Assault Lawyer

Two men have been arrested for allegedly assaulting and robbing a 48-year-old lawyer in Matunga, Mumbai. Police said the accused – Aneesh Davre (25) and Sufiyan Jamadar (25) – allegedly attacked advocate Haribhau Babulal Manav, as he had earlier insulted Davre in front of his girlfriend last month, following which she stopped talking to him.

The incident took place around 6:45 am on 13 April, when Manav had gone for a morning walk. Davre and Jamadar allegedly came on their motorcycle and attacked Manav.

“Davra started assaulting the advocate, snatched his gold chain and fled in the motorcycle, in which Jamadar had been waiting,” an officer with Matunga police said.

7. Man Sets 14-Year-Old Girl on Fire After She Resists Rape Attempt

A 14-year-old girl was allegedly set on fire by a man, after she resisted his attempt to rape her at her home in Farrukhabad district, Agra.

The crime was committed in a village under Jahanganj police jurisdiction on the afternoon of 28 April, while the girl was alone at home. She suffered over 90% burn injuries and is struggling to survive. An FIR was lodged early on Sunday, 6 May, morning, after the girl’s mother gave a written complaint against the accused.

According to the FIR, a youth identified as Kuldeep Kumar, resident of Khemsepur of Mohammadabad police jurisdiction set the girl on fire by pouring kerosene on her.

The girl’s mother told TOI, “Kumar barged inside our home and attempted to rape our daughter. When she resisted, he poured kerosene from a canister in the kitchen and set her on fire. He then fled the house.”

8. Four Held for Robbing, Assaulting a Man in a Kerala Bar

The Peroorkada police in Kerala have arrested four men on charges of assaulting and robbing a man in a bar in the city.

The four persons have been identified as Mahesh, Shanas Basheer, Dinu, and Dileep.

The four had robbed Binu of Pathirapally of Rs. 2,000 at a Kesavadasapuram restaurant-cum-bar on Thursday, 3 May.

9. Salon Executive’s Body Dumped in Wadala Drain

A day after arresting two of her colleagues at celebrity salon chain BBlunt on charges of murdering her, Mumbai Police on Sunday, 6 May, claimed one of the accused has told them that they dumped the body of 27-year-old Kirti Vyas in a drain near a cinema hall in Wadala.

Police have arrested Siddhesh Tamhankar (28) and Khushi Sahjwani (42) after the DNA from two drops of blood that had seeped into a mat in the boot of Sahjwani’s car matched Vyas’s DNA. Vyas went missing from her home in south Mumbai a month-and-a-half ago.

Police said Sahjwani had “almost confessed” to the murder and told interrogators about the location where they dumped the body.
