1. Trinamool Congress Councillor Shot Inside Party Office Near Kolkata

A Trinamool Congress (TMC) councillor of Budge Budge Municipality, 35 km south of Kolkata, was critically injured after he was shot inside a party office Monday night, 18 February, police said

Mithun Thikadar was rushed to a private hospital in south Kolkata where his condition was stated to be serious. He was shot in the chest and abdomen. The two assailants also hurled bombs at him while escaping.

Trinamool workers who were present inside the party office during the attack identified the assailants as Kamal Khan and Muhammad Kaif.

2. Decomposed, Dismembered Body of Child Found in Thane

Four days after police found a mutilated body of a four-year-old girl in Shilphata, Kalyan Railway Police found dismembered body of another child near railway tracks near Titwala on Sunday, 17 February. The body parts were highly decomposed, police said.

According to Kalyan police, the body parts were found scattered between bushes near the railway track.

“When we reached the spot, we found pieces of limbs. They seem to belong to a child not older than 10-12 years of age,” said an officer.

3. Pune: Two Booked for Admission Fraud of Over Rs 28 Lakh

Pune City Police booked two persons, including a leader of a political party, in connection with an alleged admission fraud. A 47-year-old state government official, working as executive engineer with the water resources department, lodged a complaint in the case at Bharati Vidyapeeth police station.

Accordingly, the police have lodged offence against two suspects under Sections 420 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and sections of the Information Technology Act.

4. Bentley Driven by Ponty Chadha’s Nephew Rams Autorickshaw, Tourist Killed

A 51-year-old tourist was killed and two women accompanying her, all from Turkmenistan, were injured when a Bentley Bentayga hit
an autorickshaw they were travelling in, in New Delhi’s Chanakyapuri area Monday, 18 February, afternoon.

Nineteen-year-old Asees Singh Chadha, who was allegedly driving the vehicle at a high speed, is the nephew of Ponty Chadha, former liquor baron and founder of the Wave group, who was killed in a shootout with his brother in 2012.

5. Nine-Year-Old Boy Killed After Being Hit by a Bike in Greater Noida

A man was arrested and booked for rash driving a day after a nine-year-old boy was killed after being hit by his motorcycle near Arihant Garden society in Greater Noida west on Saturday, 16 February.

The victim, identified as Bobby, lived in the colony with his family, which hails from Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh and runs a fruit shop in the area.

Jagmohan Yadav, a relative, said the accident took place around 6.30pm while trying to cross a road.

“His mother, Pushpa, was with him at the time. A man on a motorcycle hit both of them. While she received minor injuries, Bobby could not make it,” Yadav said.

6. Parking Row Turns Violent in South Mumbai as Guard Beats up 28-Year-Old Biker

A fight over parking turned violent on Sunday, 17 February, with a 24-year-old security guard, Abdulaleh Mohammed Jabir, of a south Mumbai tower allegedly beating up a two-wheeler owner, Mohammed Owes Abdul Razzak Shaikh, 28. While Shaikh is being treated at JJ hospital, Jabir has been arrested.

According to Pydhonie police, Shaikh, a businessman and resident of Masjid Bunder, got a call from his brother that his grandmother was injured after a fall in the bathroom on Saturday, 16 February. As Shaikh and his wife were headed to a wedding at Islam Gymkhana along Marine Drive, they decided to visit the grandmother, who stayed close to their house, after the function. Around 1am, they parked their scooter outside the tower and locked the handle.

7. Kodanad Case: Court Directs Police to Arrest Absconding Accused

A local court Monday, 18 February, directed police to arrest two key accused, who failed to appear before it for the second time in connection with the 2017 Kodanad heist and murder case.

As the case came up before district court Judge P Vadamalai, only seven of the ten accused appeared.

The judge posted the case for 4 March as the remaining accused did not appear.

8. 10-Year-Old Allegedly Raped by Neighbour in East Delhi

A 10-year-old girl was raped multiple times allegedly by her neighbour in east Delhi's New Ashok Vihar area, police said Monday, 18 February.

Officials at the New Ashok Nagar police station said they were on Sunday, 17 February, informed about a girl being raped allegedly by her neighbour, following which they rushed to the spot.

The victim told the investigating officer that the man (27) who lives nearby, raped her and also threatened her, police said.

9. Rape Victim Hangs Herself Out of 'Shame'

A 22-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself in her house in Maharashtra's Nagpur district, after she was raped by an accomplice of her friend last week, police said Monday, 18 February.

The woman, in a suicide note purportedly written by her, stated that she was ending her life out of shame as the incident has become public.

Police arrested four persons, including the main accused Mayur Kularkar (21) and two others, on Saturday, 16 February, a day after the alleged rape. A minor boy has been detained.
