1. Posing as CBI Sleuths, 6 Men Target Call Centre
Six persons allegedly posing as sleuths of the Central Bureau of Investigation and the Crime Branch barged into a call centre in west Delhi’s Hari Nagar, held the employees hostage, and then kidnapped two employees in their Honda City and Fortuner cars.
They extorted money to the tune of Rs 2.7 lakh before letting them go. But their luck ran out when one of the men noted down the Honda City’s licence plate number and informed police. Officers then tracked down the car and arrested three men, including a 51-year-old man.

2. Delhi: Armed Assailants Rob Men in Auto; 2 Held
On Thursday, 21 February, afternoon, a brief exchange of fire between police and four men on two bikes was reported from NH24 near Akshardham, after the latter allegedly robbed two businessmen in an auto of Rs 15-20 lakh. While no one was injured, police arrested one man for allegedly robbing the poultry farm owners, said DCP (East) Jasmeet Singh.
A 32-year-old man, who works with the two businessmen, was also arrested. “He was the one conspiring with the four men and gave them information on the movement of the two victims. He was working with them for years, and was a collection agent,” said Singh.

3. Pak Cattle-Herder Gets Three-Year Jail Term for Straying Across Border
A Pakistani national was convicted by a local court in Kutch district on Wednesday, 20 February, for illegally entering Indian territory. He was sentenced to a three-year jail term.
A magisterial court in Dayapar town of Lakhpat taluka convicted Mahhomad Akil, 25, under the Foreigners Act and the Passport Act. The court sentenced him under Sections 3 and 6 of the Passport Act and fined him Rs 300. It also found Akil guilty under Section 14 (a) and (b) of the Foreigners Act and imposed an additional fine of Rs 10,000.

4. Navi Mumbai Anti-Extortion Cell Will Now Focus Only on Vehicle Thefts
Following a dip in extortion cases, the Navi Mumbai police’s anti-extortion cell has now been converted into a vehicle-theft detection unit to tackle the increase in such cases.
On 10 February, city police chief Sanjay Kumar passed an order, stating that extortion cases, including ones involving the underworld, will be tackled by the four units of the crime branch and the police stations concerned. The anti-extortion cell had a total of 14 members — four officers and 10 constables. The cell will be given 10 more members, which will concentrate solely on vehicle thefts.
Kumar said, “Vehicle thefts in the city have increased noticeably (843 cases in 2018, up from 586 in 2017). We detected [when arrests have been made] just 30 percent of cases in 2018.”

5. Two Attacked After Shooing Away Dogs in Pune
Two men were arrested by the Pune police for assaulting Ajit Randive, 25, and his friend after they shooed away stray dogs in Koregaon Park.
The two arrested men have been identified as Vijay Sapkal, 40, and Sanjay Sapkal, 22, both residents of Sant Gadge Maharaj Vasahat, Koregaon Park.
The complaint in the matter was lodged by Randive, a resident of Hadapsar, who works as a driver in Pune.

6. 19-Year-Old Killed in an Accident, Truck Set Ablaze in Pimpri-Chinchwad
A teenager was killed after a truck hit his two-wheeler on an over-bridge near KSB chowk, Pimpri-Chinchwad. The frenzied mob of people surrounding the spot set the truck on fire, damaging it partially.
The deceased boy has been identified as Omkar (19), who was riding a Vespa on the over-bridge. The police rushed to the spot and pulled out the two-wheeler from under the burnt truck’s front wheel.
“We rushed two fire vehicles to the spot and it took us 15 minutes to douse off the fire. There was traffic chaos in the area and the truck driver was nowhere to be seen,” said Bhagwan Yamger, fire officer, General Arunkumar Vaidya Central Fire Station of Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC).

7. Man Killed for Protesting Molestation of Female Friends
28-year man died after he was allegedly beaten up by members of a club when he protested the molestation of his two female friends by them in West Bengal's South 24 Parganas district, police said Thursday, 21 February.
Though police was yet to arrest anyone in connection with the incident, around five persons, named in the FIR lodged by the family members of the deceased, were slapped with murder charges, a senior officer of South 24 Parganas district said.

8. Bentley Crash: Delhi Court Grants Bail to Business Tycoon's Son
A Delhi court on Thursday, 21 February, granted bail to Asees Singh Chadha, who was arrested after his speeding Bentley rammed into an autorickshaw, killing a foreign national and leaving three persons injured in Lutyen's Delhi.
Additional Sessions Judge Sudesh Kumar granted relief to Chadha on furnishing a bail bond of Rs 2 lakh and two sureties of the like amount.
A magisterial court had dismissed his bail plea.
A 51-year-old Turkmenistan national Gulshat Alijanova was killed while three persons – Raghubir Singh, the auto-driver and a resident of Sangam Vihar, and Turkmenistan nationals Alma Gul Atayeba (33) and Gulia Yyam (55) – were critically injured on Monday after the accident.

9. Arrested Cong MLA Brought to Bengaluru From Gujarat, Jailed
Congress MLA JN Ganesh was on Thursday, 21 February, flown to Bengaluru from Gujarat, a day after being arrested for allegedly assaulting another lawmaker from his party.
He was produced before the Ramanagara district court, which remanded him to judicial custody for 14 days.
The Kampli MLA from Ballari district has been lodged in the Parappana Agrahara jail.
Ganesh was arrested near a restaurant in Somnath, weeks after he was declared absconding for allegedly thrashing Anand Singh during a brawl at a resort on city outskirts during the recent political turmoil in the state.
