India-ASEAN Ties “Free from Contests and Claims”: PM Modi in Op-Ed

Leaders of nine ASEAN countries reached New Delhi on Wednesday, 24 January, for the ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit, which will be held on 25 and 26 January. The Indonesian President will reach the country on Thursday.

PM Modi is expected to address the plenary session of the summit on Thursday. He will also hold bilateral meetings with the leaders of 3 nations, where several MOUs will be signed.

PM Holds Talks With Counterparts from Malaysia

Prime Minister Narendra Modi today held bilateral talks with his Malaysian counterpart Nazib Razak, focusing on ways to enhance counter-terror cooperation and boost ties in areas of defence, trade and investment.

The external affairs ministry spokesperson said the two leaders had an "engaging" discussion.

India, ASEAN Relations 'Free from Contests, Claims': Modi in Op-Ed

India and ASEAN have relations "free from contests and claims" and believe in sovereign equality of all nations irrespective of size, and support for free and open pathways of commerce and engagement, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said today.

Twenty-seven newspapers in 10 languages in 10 ASEAN countries have published the op-ed by the Prime Minister on the historic occasion of 69th Republic Day and ASEAN-India Commemorative Summit, External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said in a tweet.

PM Modi Addresses ASEAN Leaders

PM Narendra Modi addressed the leaders of the ASEAN Summit on Thursday after holding a series of bilateral talks.

It is India’s privilege to host the ASEAN leaders. The leaders will be our honoured guests at the Republic Day celebrations... Since 1992 our partnership has evolved, we have made success in implementing objective of ASEAN-India partisanship for peace, progress and shared prosperity through five year plan of action.

He said that India shares the ASEAN vision of societies based on values of peace.

We are committed to work with ASEAN nations to enhance collaboration in the maritime domain... In highlights the importance of our strategic partnership placing ASEAN at the centre of India’s Act East Policy. Our friendship has been nurtured by our shared culture and civilisation linkages.
