A visit to the temple town of Rameshwaram in the southern tip of the country also entails a visit to the ‘Kalam House’ for many tourists.

Located at the Mosque street in Rameshwaram, this was the house where Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam, son of Jainulabdeen and Ashiamma was brought up with his brother.

Jainulabdeen was a boat owner and Ashiamma a housewife. The son of this boat owner grew up to become one of India’s most respected scientists and later, a revered President.

Dr APJ Abdul Kalam’s house at Rameshwaram has been converted to a museum that narrates the story of his childhood and achievements. The museum is maintained by his elder brother Mohammed Muthu Meera Lebbai Maraicker.
