The investigation in the gangrape and murder of a 15-year-old Dalit girl in Haryana’s Jind district has taken a new turn, as the police is now also probing an honour killing angle, reported The Times of India.

This comes after a 20-year-old Dalit youth, who was being touted as the main accused in the case, was also found dead near the Bhakra Canal. Given their disappearance around the same time on 9 January, the police is now probing if the two eloped together and were killed to save their families’ “honour”.

No injury mark has been found on body of the 20-year-old man, as PTI reported.

After the girl’s body was found, Haryana Police nabbed the boy’s family members on the basis of a complaint filed by the girl’s kin. However, there has been no proof of the man being linked with the gangrape and murder.

Both the minor and the youth belonged to the same village, but the girl belonged to a higher community than the man’s.

Mamta Singh, IG (crime against women), Haryana told ToI:

It is too early now. The cause of death will ascertain the number of theories we are working on.

His body was handed over to his family after the postmortem.

His family refused to cremate the body and sought the release of all his relatives detained for questioning.

Our priority is to get the postmortem report to ascertain the cause of the death. Once the cause of the death is clear, we shall proceed further.
