In a first of its kind, a temple prasadam from Tamil Nadu has been granted the Geographical Indication (GI) tag. The famous ‘Palani panchamirtham’ that is offered to the deity at the Arulmigu Dhandayuthapani Swamy Temple in Tamil Nadu has been given the GI tag, reported The Hindu.
The application was filed by the Joint Commissioner/Executive Officer of the temple and was confirmed by Chinnaraja G. Naidu, Deputy Registrar of Geographical Indications.
The panchamirtham is an ‘abhishega prasadam’ or food that is a religious offering made up of five substances- banana, jaggery, cow ghee, honey and cardamom. Dates and diamond sugar candies are added for flavour.
