A 24-year-old German woman was allegedly raped by unidentified men in Mamallapuram, near Chennai, on Sunday. She was part of a group of tourists visiting the country. The tourist was walking alone by a casuarina grove near the resort when the incident occurred.

According to media reports, five German nationals had reached the city a couple of days back and had left to Mamallapuram on Saturday. Times of India reports that the rape survivor had been sun bathing on the resort's private beach on Sunday.

She had then decided to take a stroll along the coast, but wandered too far from the resort's private beach and reportedly dozed off.

The German Embassy in Delhi was alerted and they in turn contacted the Kanchipuram police station.

It was only after this that the police stationed in Mahabalipuram became aware of the incident. Police claim that the rape survivor could not provide any clarity on who the attackers were.

The all-woman police station, which is handling the case, took down the statement from the survivor and also briefed senior police officials about the incident. She reportedly gave whatever details she could about the attackers.
